He was robbed, shot and killed Monday night while attempting to buy an iPhone6 from Craigslist, Marietta police said Tuesday afternoon. Less than 24 hours later, investigators had arrested three suspects and charged them with murder...

Jones had responded to a Craigslist ad and was attempting to buy a phone when he was approached by three people, Baldwin said. There was no phone to sell. “It was set up for them to rob whoever showed up,” Baldwin said. Police arrested Jordan Baker, 18; Jonathon Myles, 19; and Kaylnn Ruthenberg, 21. All three were charged with felony murder, armed robbery and aggravated assault and were booked into the Cobb County jail.

On Monday, Cobb County superior court judge Stephen Schuster sentenced Kalynn Ruthenberg to life in prison without the chance of parole plus 25 years.

“James Jones was a true victim. He was a son, brother, mentor and best friend who went to buy a cell phone that cost him his life,” Schuster said, according to the district attorney’s office.

Ruthenberg was convicted earlier this month of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and armed robbery among other charges.

On Friday, James Baker and Jonathon Myles pleaded guilty to armed robbery, robbery by force and two gang charges as part of a deal to avoid murder charges in the 2015 case, the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

Baker and Myles were sentenced to 30 years with 20 to serve in prison and the remainder of the sentence on probation.

But that likely won’t soothe Jones’ family, whose loved one had hoped to be a doctor.

“My mother feels that 20 years from now, she still won’t have her son, and it’s not fair,” Jones’ brother, Samuel Heath, said in court. “It’s been a long three years … We never want anyone to experience this nightmare.”
