Lesley Gore. Dead at 68. :(

I guess that was a little bit before my time, but I know the song and that's too bad nevertheless.

NEW YORK (AP) — Singer-songwriter Lesley Gore, who topped the charts in 1963 at age 16 with her epic song of teenage angst, "It's My Party," and followed it up with the hits "Judy's Turn to Cry," and the feminist anthem "You Don't Own Me," died Monday. She was 68.

Gore died of lung cancer at New York University Langone Medical Center in Manhattan, according to her partner of 33 years, Lois Sasson.

"She was a wonderful human being — caring, giving, a great feminist, great woman, great human being, great humanitarian," Sasson, a jewelry designer, told The Associated Press...

“The more people understand that they probably already know a gay person, and in fact adore them, then the better off we're gonna be—and that may take awhile, but it's happening, for sure. By the time I shut my eyes for good, I'll have seen a real difference, I think, and I'm happy about that.”

I actually did cry at my 13th birthday party after seeing the boy I liked holding hands with my friend. I sat home the next day and played that single over and over and cried. :floorlaugh:

Her hits were before I was born, but I loved Lesley Gore. The group I hung with in the 80's were the muscle car crowd and greasers. We used to jokingly say, "it's totally 50's" if something was cool and "totally 80's" if it sucked. "You don't own me" will always be my favorite.

Best era of music - ever.

Sleep peacefully Lesley. :

R.I.P. Lesley

I could be wrong but I believe she was the first individual baby boomer to have a #1 record on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with It's My Party in June of 1963-beating out Stevie Wonder and his Fingertips Pt. 2 by more than two months.

You tell 'em, Lesley! RIP. :rose:

You Don't Own Me

You don't own me, I'm not just one of your many toys
You don't own me, don't say I can't go with other boys

And don't tell me what to do
And don't tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display, 'cause

You don't own me, don't try to change me in any way
You don't own me, don't tie me down 'cause i'd never stay

Oh, I don't tell you what to say
I don't tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That's all I ask of you

I'm young and I love to be young
I'm free and I love to be free
To live my life the way I want
To say and do whatever I please

A-a-a-nd don't tell me what to do
Oh-h-h-h don't tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display

I don't tell you what to say
Oh-h-h-h don't tell you what to do...

I was fortunate to see her live a couple of years ago at the FABULOUS PALM SPRINGS FOLLIES. Lung cancer notwithstanding, she was belting out her hits as well as ever! My best wishes to her partner and fans.

I haven't thought about Lesley in years. So sorry. What talent! She is just a few years older than I.
