"Police had previously pleaded with the public, asking people to keep their eyes open for her blue Chevrolet Astro minivan.

On Monday, Cochrane RCMP discovered Coates’ minivan in a secluded area approximately 50 kilometers west of Cochrane, on the Morley First Nation Reserve.

Officers conducted a physical search of the area, but didn’t find Coates’ remains."

...Investigators say her disappearance is not considered suspicious and the investigation is continuing.

ABSOLUTELY ABSURD!!! TOTALLY - COMPLETELY...

ETA:  REALLY? even after her van was found in Morley???

Here is a FB page devoted to Sarah:

Sara Coates, 32, was last seen in the Stanley Park area south of downtown Calgary on Thursday August 2, 2012.

She is described as 5'2, 110 pounds with long red hair and blue eyes. She was known to also go by the names 'Meka' or 'Meko' and has a small homemade tattoo of a heart on her left knuckle.

She was known to travel in and around Calgary with her dog and three cats travelling in a Blue Chevrolet Astro Van. The van has a cream colored passenger door and a broken back window. The license plate number is: BBG 5602

I'm wondering if they found the remains of all of her pets in the van? That would certainly be a bad sign.

I do not think the pets were recovered. The family has brought awareness to the pets on the FB page and asks to keep an eye out for them.

If she was living in her van I wonder if she had a cell phone.

There is also a FB page for a Meka Coates listed in Calgary.

"Though Coates, who also went by the nicknames Meka or Meko, is from Calgary, she spent a lot of time travelling around and camping, said Const. Karl Sudyk with the missing persons unit.

But when her mother didn’t hear from her for several months, she became concerned and reported Coates missing in December.

Wonder if they've discovered anything that led them to that conclusion, other than the van being found there...

Maybe they found a note or other evidence in her van to suggest she is deceased, and LE have since been searching for Sara's remains.
Hope she is still truckin' out there somewhere.

from the article Lois linked upthread:

She was travelling with three cats and a dog.

The can has a cream-coloured passenger door and the window is missing from the rear passenger door

Can't see a young gal voluntarily (i.e. suicide?) leaving 3 cats and a dog behind without making arrangements for them ... let alone letting them outside her van while she possibly met with misadventure.

I can see a person driving around with a dog maybe staying in the van without trying to get out an open window (depending on the dog), but 3 cats?? If she normally travelled with them, would they not have been somehow confined to prevent them from going out the window? If 3 cats were caged for their safety, why/how were they released never to be found?

ETA: Never mind re the 'missing' window. Pics on the MP FB page show the van with the right rear tailgate window covered with plastic and tape.

On the MP page April 20, Sara's mom comments that, when weather permits, a dive team will be searching a pond for her remains "in the area she perished in".

The wording makes it sound as if they know she is deceased.

FWIW

... the area itself has been searched thoroughly by search and rescue several times. there are many animals up there and also the flood impacted the area in 2013.

Mysterious case of missing woman

Dubhe Coates, mother of Sarah Coates, has not given up in the search for her daughter.

The red-haired, blue-eyed, 30-year-old was last seen by her mother in Calgary, in the southwest neighbourhood of Stanley Park on Aug. 2, 2012. Sarah was reported missing by her mother early December of that year, with news sources picking up the story May 2013. Sarah’s van was found after the flood on Stoney First Nation on Oct. 22, 2013. Sarah has yet to be found.

“It is not time to close this yet. We have to find out what happened to my daughter,” Dubhe Coates pleaded. “My daughter was a nice person, who was kind to people.”

“The bank isn’t supposed to tell you the account balance but I was crying so much and so hysterical that the (teller) told me there was no bank activity since August.”

The mother immediately called the police to report Sarah missing.

“The day I reported her, I knew she was dead,” Dubhe said quietly.

Sarah is still listed as a missing person, although her case file cannot be found on the website, due to the change from a provincial database to a national one. The queue just needs to be updated to include Sarah’s information, Pumphrey explained.

“We get the odd Crime Stopper tip but none of them have been creditable so far – we talk to people quite often but we are still awaiting any new information,” Pumphrey said. “We believe she died out there, but we don’t know where.”
