When 'Cpt Mailula' turned up at Polokwane police department in Limpopo, South Africa in 2012, no-one checked his credentials. Nearly three years on, he's been outed - as rapist and escaped convict Alex Matsobane Maake.
Police colleagues arrested him last month, when the truth was discovered. Unfortunately, he managed to escape two days later and is still on the run.
'The paper interviewed several police officers who knew him, with some saying they were shocked and others claiming there had always been something strange about the so-called Capt Mailula.'
Head of the police department, Col. Ronel Otto says: "It's not our finest hour."
