Police released new sketches Thursday of Jane and Janet Doe in the latest attempt to identify two women found dead in the so-called “killing field” on Calder Road.

The sketches show both women five to 10 years younger then they were when they were killed, police said.

Detectives believe Jane Doe was 25 years old when she was discovered in a field in the 3000 block of Calder Road on Feb. 2, 1986. Police said she was about 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighed about 140 pounds. Police said she had shoulder-length, light reddish-brown hair.

Janet Doe was found at the same field Sept. 8, 1991, police said. She was about 31 years old. Police said she was about 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighed about 130 pounds. Police said she had long, light brown hair.

Two other victims have also been found at the field. Heidi Fye, 25, was found in April 1984. The body of 16-year-old Laura Miller was found there in February 1986.

Very interesting that 2 of the victims disappeared from the local convience store to use the phone. The killer could have hanging out near the store in search of a victim. I think the killer is a single male who lives in the area and is probably a loner.

It's pretty freaky to imagine what happened to those poor girls. I took some photos of the area, which is currently being developed. A girl only one year older than me from my area was abducted my senior year of high school and never heard from again. It's a sad, sad world...

I have a couple of maps in there of where the convenience store was/is located in relation to where the bodies were found. :(

I can no longer edit my last response, but I was cleaning out some papers the other day and found something about the killer that I jotted down and forgot about. It's a semi-convoluted story... I worked at my local (League City) library for the past couple years and a frequent patron and I were having a discussion one day about the killing fields. She had taken a criminology class at the Clear Lake branch of the Univ. of Houston. Anyway, she said several law enforcement students were in the class and they discussed how the local police knew the man that they believe committed the murders in the I-45 murders in the '70s. He was from the area and frequented a bar called the Blue Moon Bar or Club in Dickinson (the next town over from League City towards the South on I-45). Apparently, he hung out there and is currently serving a prison sentence for other crime(s). The police know it's him and he actually is aware they know... I wish I could say I knew more, such as who he is, where he lived, etc. I wonder if the police (whichevere jurisdiction) have let the parents and family of the women know about their suspicions. I just find the whole idea dissettling, but at least he's put away at the moment.

Erin, here's your suspect, I think

Authorities said that after interviewing Mark Stallings, 34, they consider him a strong suspect in multiple homicides near the Calder Road area in League City, Texas, in Galveston County.

Stallings is currently serving 489 years in the Texas Department of Corrections for aggravated assault and an escape attempt.

He would have only been about 19 when these girls were killed. I mean I know it is possible, but it just seems strange that a 19 year old kid, would have been beginning such a major serial killing "career". And that he got away with it for so long.

Thank you! That's a lot of years, isn't it? He must have done some serious crimes to accumulate that many years in our justice system. He definitely seems like a prime candidate...

I haven't studied serial killers, but I see your point. At the same time, usually serial killers tend to escalate in their crimes: starting out with robberies, sexual assaults, peeping toms, etc. Then they move onto the bigger crimes. One thing in favor of the idea of Mark Stalling being the serial killer is that his prior crimes would have been esponged from his juvenile record, since he would have been under 18...

Let's hope it's true!!!

Courtesy of the Scared Monkeys Blog, a letter posted to Tim Miller by his daughter's (Laura) killer is printed in its entirety on the site. I took some scans of the letter, which is 2-sided and also typed up what I could read. Since Robert Abel, one of the main suspects died from apparent suicide months before, it is believed that either a friend or family member of Abel typed up the letter [using different computer fonts] to detract attention from Abel's role in the crimes. At least that's what authorities and Tim Miller believe.

Although nothing really new is revealed in the letter, some interesting ideas are put forth: the killer targets brown-haired caucasian woman because of a certain woman. Maybe someone that spurned him, ala Tim Bundy? Also six bodies exist according to the killer, not four, so two have not been found because he hid them from view. The alleged killer also says he's not the only killer around the area. The reason to put the girls in the killing field was for publicity and to exhibit them, and more woman will die. He refers to 666 (the sign of the devil) and calls himself the Phantom? Or maybe that's what the police believe he is... He also knows that Officer Pat Cereal profiled the murders, but says he was wrong and he tampered with evidence. Does that mean he's someone on the inside, like a policeman? And this killer of woman makes sure to emphasize that the "NASA horseman Abel" is not the right suspect. How kind of him, right? Or if there is any legitimacy to this claim, then maybe he wants to get the credit. His MO changes and one cryptic phrase is "for the little shrine & more are more secret." Insteresting to speculate

I also made a pretty inacurate map of the convenience store phone location & where the bodies of the Calder Road victims were found.

I've been interested in this case for awhile, and I was looking through Doe Network's Identified page and found this identified victim, Donna Jean Snowden:
105UFTX.jpg

She has the exact same look as the other victims in the Killing Fields, and the area where she was found is just across Galveston Bay, and she was discovered 2 yrs. after the last Janet Doe (no word on the actual time of death). Were these crimes ever connected at all?

I looked up Donna Jean Snowden to no avail but could not find any specifics on what surrounded her murder. Are there any other UIDs or murder victims in that area with the same 'look' (dainty nose, brown hair with a middle part, etc.)?

The whole case is just so creepy - a serial killer seemingly targeting a very specific look and set of facial features!

The doe was found in February of 1986 and Rita Hughes didn't disappear until December of 1986, over 10 months later. On that basis, Rita is not a match.

blah. Thought I read December 1985. I want these girls to be ID'd so badly!

High probability both were murdered by the same person/persons.
But what I find interesting is both showed signs of "OLD HEALED FRACTURES"of the ribs. And both estimated to have been there about the same amount of time.

I wonder if these two could have been abducted together on the same day at the same place?
And buried at the field on the same day together.

Perhaps the old healed fractures are nothing more than a coincidence.
