On March 26, 1988, Sarah Singleton made a discovery no mother should ever see. Her daughter, 26-year-old Annette Singleton stabbed to death in her own home. That cold rainy day is forever embedded in Singleton's mind.

Annette, a young mother of two, was a hard-working woman by all accounts. So when she didn't show up for her shift at 7-Eleven on LaSalle Avenue that morning, an employee called her mother. Sarah drove over to her daughter's home on Roanoke Avenue... Annette's Camaro was still parked in front of her house. Her door was unlocked and as soon as Sarah walked inside, she knew something was wrong...

Annette's 2-year-old son was also found on the bed, covered in his mother's blood, but unharmed. Her 8-year-old daughter spent the night at her grandmother's the night before, so she wasn't home.

According to a narrative attached to the autopsy of Annette Singleton, neighbors told police they heard loud screams coming from the woman's house about 11 p.m... they saw several men running from the house after the screams. One of Annette Singleton's friends told police he talked to her on the telephone shortly after 9 p.m. Twice, he said, their conversation was interrupted by two men knocking on the front door.

A man broke into Annette Singleton's house the night after the killing, although it had been sealed by police. He wasn't charged with the murder. Another man was charged with the crime several weeks later. But the charge was dismissed because prosecutors decided he didn't commit the crime...

Mrs. Singleton said she wonders if someone thought her daughter was carrying home money from the 7-Eleven, where Annette Singleton had been a manager. She said she is confident the killers were looking for something because several stuffed animals in the house were ripped apart...

Sgt. Mike Brewer, a Police Department spokesman... said the evidence so far does not indicate Annette was involved in drugs. The autopsy found no evidence of drugs or alcohol in her system.
