Nicholas Figueroa Missing After East Village Explosion

A New York City family is searching for their loved one who they say was on a date on the ground floor restaurant of an East Village building that went up in flames following an explosion.

Nicholas Figueroa, 23, was last known to be at Sushi Park, located at 121 Second Avenue, on Thursday afternoon before a blast in the basement shook the structure.

Moises Locon, Missing After East Village Explosion, Was Saving Up To Return To Home Country

A man who went missing after Thursday’s explosion in Manhattan’s East Village was working as a busboy to save up enough money to live comfortably in his home country of Guatemala.

Moises Locon was employed by the restaurant Sushi Park, where he worked twelve-hour shifts six days a week. “He felt tired and wanted to rest, but he needed more money to be well in Guatemala,” his brother, Zacarias Locon, said. He also said his brother wished to work as a teacher when he returned.

Theresa Galarza had been on a date with Nicholas Figueroa, who was still missing late Friday.

Galarza was blasted into the street from inside the Sushi Park restaurant and landed in front of the Orpheum Theatre, home of “Stomp,” the sources said.

Besides Figueroa, 23, who lives in Harlem, a restaurant busboy, Moises Locon, 27, of Elmhurst, Queens, was unaccounted for.

Galarza recalled Figueroa getting up to pay the check before the explosion. Authorities believe he was standing near Locon at the time of the blast in the basement.

Both were likely blown upward, then sucked into the cellar and buried in rubble.

From February 2016:

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/12/n...ion-with-east-village-gas-explosion.html?_r=0

The gas explosion that killed two people and destroyed three buildings last spring in the East Village was a catastrophic consequence of a scheme by a landlord who had installed an illegal gas line and hid the setup from inspectors, all in a bid to hold onto tenants and their high rents, prosecutors said on Thursday.

Nearly a year after the blast rocked the neighborhood, the landlord and three other people were arrested on Thursday and charged with involuntary manslaughter, and a fifth person, a licensed plumber, was charged with aiding the scheme by selling the use of his credentials...

The four charged with second-degree manslaughter are: Dilber Kukic, 40, the contractor; Athanasios Ioannidis, 59, an unlicensed plumber; Maria Hrynenko, 56, the owner of the building; and her son, Michael Hrynenko Jr., 30. The fifth defendant, Andrew Trombettas, 57, faces lesser charges for supplying his master license to Mr. Ioannidis.
