Monroe County grand jurors indicted Yolanda Williams, 24, on charges of first-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child in the death of A.J. Gibson Jr., who died July 21 after being immersed in hot water.

Homicide charges could be considered by another grand jury once prosecutors have received the final report establishing the cause of the boy's death, said Assistant District Attorney Douglas A. Randall.

A neighbor of Williams on Driving Park Avenue called 911 after Williams asked for help.

The boy wasn't breathing when police arrived at the scene.

The boy was covered with burns and he had a deep cut on his forehead, police said.

He was taken to Rochester General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The mother of a 5-year-old Rochester boy who was fatally scalded refused today to plead guilty and accept a prison sentence of up to 25 years.

Yolanda Williams, 24, rejected a plea to first-degree manslaughter in the July 21 death of Arthur "A.J." Gibson Jr. in their Driving Park Avenue apartment.

"I'm not willing to take a plea," she told Monroe County Court Judge Patricia D. Marks.

Williams had been charged with first-degree assault instead of homicide because prosecutors were waiting for a report from pathologists that linked the boy's death to the injuries he suffered.

That report, filed in December, said the burns inflicted on the boy were the final straw of several weeks of physical abuse.

Prosecutors now will present evidence to a grand jury in an attempt to get a homicide charge against Williams. Possible charges include second-degree murder, first- and second-degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide.

"Any relevant homicide charges that we can present, we will," said Assistant District Attorney Catherine Wagner.

Maybe someone should give her a nice hot bath. My god, why not just drop the children off at their nearest church or hospital. What is wrong with people? Was society always like this? I read about these mothers harming their children, and it kills me!
