In 1945, Baker, a black woman, was tried, convicted and sentenced in one day by an all-white jury!
Pardon planned for only woman executed in Georgia's chair
The Associated Press - ALBANY, Ga.
Lena Baker, the only woman ever executed in Georgia's electric chair, is set to receive a pardon from the state _ 60 years after the black maid was put to death for killing her white employer who she claimed held her in slavery and threatened her life.
The Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles has decided to grant a posthumous pardon _ only the second in the state's history _ to Baker, board spokeswoman Scheree Lipscomb said Monday. Baker was sentenced to die Aug. 14, 1944, following a one-day trial before an all-white, all-male jury in southwest Georgia's Randolph County.
The pardons board plans to present a proclamation to Baker's descendants at its Aug. 30 meeting in Atlanta, making the pardon official. --->>
