An extra special prom

Zane McIntyre and prom date Shayla Miller

[...]
According to the Grand Forks Herald, 18-year-old Shayla Miller was born with cerebral palsy and other disorders that led doctors to believe she would never be able to walk or talk. Miller defied the odds, however, undergoing 16 surgeries in 17 years, while recently learning how to walk again after suffering a stroke just over a year ago.

Throughout the years, Miller became a huge fan of UND hockey, prompting her mom to reach out to the standout goalie about taking his No. 1 fan to prom this year. McIntyre’s answer was a resounding yes.

“I said, ‘Count me in, I’d enjoy going back to prom,'” McIntyre said, per the Grand Forks Herald. “I’m really going to enjoy it. I think it’s going to be awesome.”

Thanks, Rocco. This news did make me :) (and I know zip about hockey :blushing:). Just a simple, old-fashioned, feel-good story about two beautiful young people. So refreshing.

Just have her home before curfew young man. Lol.

This is what dreams are made of. Good times and Clean fun.

Darn it to all of you! And the pile of onions in the room!
What beautiful people. Both of them. They had a night they will cherish for life.

WOW!! how sweet is this? I needed to read something that made me smile today! THANK YOU ROCCO!

Thanks, Bessie, for posting a picture and the additional link.

Ah yes, Senior Prom----a memory that lasts a lifetime for all young ladies. I remember my daughter going to prom with all the excitement and fond memories that she still has and talks about.

Once in a lifetime events like this seem to affect people for the rest of their lives. I sadly remember the spunky girl from Port Arthur who wasn't asked to prom and how years later, even though she became famous because of her tremendous talent, never got over the rejection she felt and I don't think her self esteem ever recovered.

I'll share a little tidbit about Zane: Goalies have their masks painted with all different kinds of unique pictures. Zane? Had a caricature of his grandmother painted on the back of his mask with the inscription 'Love you, Grandma Susie' because of the influence she had in his life.

It's truly special that these two young people who have both accomplished so much in their short lives, attended this prom together.

This is just so wonderful of you to post this. I know I speak for a lot of women out here when I say, you really are showing your soft side.
