A fierce blaze has destroyed a rubber shoe factory in Manila, Philippines on Wednesday, killing 45 and leaving at least 26 unaccounted for. The death toll is expected to rise.

The Mayor of the Valenzuela suburb Rex Gatchalian said the government was "still praying and hoping that the 26, some of them, must have gotten out earlier in the morning and had gone to relatives" without telling officials they were safe.

Some of the bodies were still inside the building on Thursday morning.

The fire was reportedly started when sparks from welding work ignited flammable chemicals near the building's entrance.

Many of the victims were trapped on the second floor of the building and were texting family and friends for help, from inside.

How horrid for those victims. I imagine there wasn't a sprinkler system. I hope they weren't locked in.

The images are devastating. The linked article mentioned lax safety standards. I can't even begin to imagine the terror the workers experienced.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all affected. This is absolutely tragic.

CNN says the factory is owned by Kentex Manufacturing Corp.

The Manila Standard has a one-liner saying as of September 2014, the factory met DOLE 'general labor standards'

This is DOLE, a governmental department.

And CNN has just updated. The death toll has risen to 72 now. :(
