A stubborn British Lollipop man (crosswalk attendant) who had to be escorted off the road by astounded on-call firefighters, has been sacked, his employer has announced.
The unnamed man had continued to usher parents and children across the road as the fire truck approached, siren blaring and lights flashing. He refused to move and blocked the firefighters from attending a tree fire blazing just behind him in the town of Luton. Local resident and eyewitness Jacqui Brittain (what a suitable name for such a British story) described it as like 'watching a car crash' unfold as four or five firefighters had to exit the truck and 'escort' the man off the road.

A council spokesperson said: Luton Borough Council has now concluded its enquiries into reports that a School Crossing Patrol Officer held up a fire engine on an emergency call on 13 April.
After following our due process, the employee concerned has been summarily dismissed on the grounds of gross misconduct.
