" Close to 100 people gathered downtown Saturday afternoon to remember a 26-year-old cyclist who was struck and killed by a vehicle while riding his bike in Yorkville last weekend.

At around 11:30 p.m. last Saturday, Burlington resident Adam Excell was riding along Avenue Road, near Davenport Road, when he was hit by a car that fled the scene of the accident. He was pronounced dead a short time after the collision.

As a tribute to Excell, friends and family rode their bikes Saturday from Bloor Street and Spadina Avenue to the scene of the accident, where a growing memorial was found around a white “ghost bike” chained to a pole".

“I feel like people are unaware, need to check their mirrors more. In the downtown core, drivers are too stressed out and panic and make bad decisions,” Royce said.

Police have charged a 19-year-old man, who turned himself in, in connection with the hit-and-run collision that left Excell dead."

The family of a 26-year-old cyclist, who was killed in a hit-and-run by a 19-year-old driver who wove around stopped traffic to speed through an amber light, were devastated to learn the man will be able to drive again in 10 years.

Mitchell Irwin, now 21, was sentenced to four years in prison and a six-year driving ban on Monday after pleading guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of Adam Excell, as well as failing to remain at the scene and breaching his bail conditions.
