Search underway for two murderers missing from state prison in Dannemora
PUBLISHED: SATURDAY, JUNE 6, 2015 AT 9:43 AM - UPDATED: SATURDAY, JUNE 6, 2015 AT 11:18 AM
Daily Courier-Observer

DANNEMORA - A search is underway for two prisoners, both serving sentences for murder convictions, that were discovered missing early Saturday morning from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora.

New York State Police said they received a call at 5:45 a.m. Saturday from corrections’ officials reporting two prisoners were unaccounted for during a 5:30 a.m. bed check. State police are now currently searching for the two escaped prisoners.

They are:
Richard Matt, 48, a white male, 6’ tall, 210 pounds, with black hair and hazel eyes. He has tattoos on back “Mexico Forever”, a heart on his chest and left shoulder, and a marine corps insignia on his right shoulder.

David Sweat, 34, white male, 5’11” tall, 165 pounds, brown hair and green eyes. He has tattoos on his left bicep and his right fingers
NY Gov.: 2 Convicted Murderers Used Power Tools to Escape
DANNEMORA, N.Y. — Jun 6, 2015, 4:50 PM ET
ABC News/AP

Two convicted murderers used power tools to cut through steel pipes at a maximum-security prison near the Canadian border and escape through a manhole, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Saturday.

"It was an elaborate plot," Cuomo said after joining law enforcement authorities to retrace the prisoners' escape route from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, N.Y.

[...]
"A search revealed that here was a hole cut out of the back of the cell through which these inmates escaped," Annucci said. "They went onto a catwalk which is about 6 stories high. We estimate they climbed down and had power tools and were able to get out to this facility through tunnels, cutting away at several spots."

Massive Search For Escaped Inmates
Two escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility
UPDATED 6:26 PM EDT Jun 06, 2015

DANNEMORA, N.Y. —New York State Police say they are searching for two inmates described as "dangerous" who escaped overnight from Clinton Correctional Facility.

[...]
The Governor calls the escape "extraordinary" and says it's the first time anyone has escaped from the maximum security portion of the facility since it opened in 1865.

[...]
State police have set up numerous roadblocks in the greater Dannemora area as they search for the escapees. WPTZ's Vanessa Misciagna reports armed troopers are searching every vehicle on Route 374 at a police checkpoint, and dozens of troopers and corrections officers are searching the woods off Smith Street.

Anyone who sees people resembling the prisoners or with any information should call State Police at 563-3761.

Law enforcement squabbles reportedly hamper search for escaped killers

The ongoing manhunt for two convicted murderers who escaped from a maximum security New York prison earlier this month has been set back by conflicts between the law enforcement agencies pursuing the men.

The New York Post reported late Sunday that the New York State Police, the lead agency into the investigation, has refused to share information about the planning and scope of the search for David Sweat and Richard Matt. Some of the other agencies involved in the manhunt are local police, the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department, the state Correctional Services Department, the state Environmental Conservation Department, and the U.S. Marshals.

Source: Plot included murder

Joyce Mitchell allegedly told investigators she had discussed a plan with two convicted murderers that she would pick them up after they broke out of prison and they would possibly kill her husband and flee to an undisclosed destination, a law enforcement source told the Times Union on Saturday.

The source, who did not have direct knowledge of the interrogation, was told that during two State Police interviews lasting 10 hours each, Mitchell allegedly said David Sweat and Richard Matt may have planned to flee to a cabin at an undisclosed location in Vermont.

Wasting precious time stopping in to murder Lyle for no apparent reason would only handicap their smooth escape. I don't believe that was their plan. I think that was perhaps what she was led to believe to be the plan.....she thinks that she is crucial to this escape and doesn't realize she's just a pawn. JMO

I agree. I think they led her to believe they would murder him but never planned to. Murdering him would have just tipped LE off that Matt and Sweat were with Mitchell and then they would know what vehicle to look for. Also interesting to me that the news discusses everything and speculates on everything except for what would have happened to Mitchell if she had shown up to be the getaway driver. They quote her as saying they were going to drive 7 hours away to some location where they would need her 4 wheel drive vehicle. IMO if she had shown up she would have been murdered and not her husband. If she was able to provide them with all that other stuff then she could have possibly gotten then weapons as well. This is also a ridiculous time for LE to not be getting along and coordinating on the search. Let's put the safety of our communities ahead of our disagreements.

BTW, CNN is back to doing periodic live segments about this, they were interiewing a retired guard from Clinton about fifteen minutes ago. So far TWCNews seems to be having a very slow morning. Last week it seemed that they were showing pre recorded stuff over and over and over until 9am. Hopefully they take advantage of the hearing being at 830am today and get back on the air live by 7 or 7:30 to show her being brought in, etc. But it really is a very small-town news station so we'll see. www.twcnews.com - you can watch the same thing there live that I see on tv from that link, just navigate to it from there.

Catching Up..thank you for time and link!!

Dear Gawd another home invasion near me. 2 perps in black and ski masks. Said gimme all your medicine (LOL) so man reaches for what they think is medicine and grabs his bowie knife. Holds it to one of them. Off they run. Thank gawd it wasn't me as I would have collapsed into a corner thinking the sweaty matt duo made it here! Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Appearance delayed as per CNN. Usually can't post here the past several days, I always get a greyed out post box or reply box, usually both, also if I try to edit or quote anyone, so I've only been posting about 1 out of every 7 or 8 things I've been trying to share. So I'd like to say I will transcribe when she appears but chances are I can't, sorry.

Per CNN Tillie Court Appearance delayed. Her Lawyer recused himself. Conflict of interest. New Lawyer just appointed. I think i caught just an hour or so delay as new Lawyer meets with her.

Judge takes Bruno and DA Wylie in chambers.

There was a Lawyer speaking on CNN and said if just present charges the 7 or so years will likely turn into approx. 2.5 years she actually serves. Laws need to change!!!! That's appalling!

9:15 EST is time for appearance CNN is reporting

Cuomo to Announce Investigation of Prison Escape

With frustrations rising and questions multiplying, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo will announce on Monday a formal investigation by the state inspector general into “all factors” involved in the escape of two convicted murderers from a maximum-security prison in northern New York.

<snip>

The state’s inspector general, Catherine Leahy Scott, will examine prison protocols and procedures, as well as the possible roles of other civilian and uniformed prison employees, some of whom are already under investigation by state authorities. Ms. Scott, whose office polices tens of thousands of state workers in the executive branch, has subpoena power and the authority to recommend cases to prosecutors.

Expected to start in a half hour with Joyce Mitchell preliminary #PrisonBreakNY waiting for her representation

I dont know how much Prison Employees are paid. If it varies State to State etc. I do know here in Canada they are paid a good wage. Between that and cutbacks it can create a lax enviroment. If underpaid and overworked that's not conducive to a well oiled machine. IMO

Oh come on judge, it wasn't just them. We all saw the hearing and we all saw the first thing the judge did was say "there's a petition to allow video and audio recording, do you want to allow this?" and the lawyers both said yes.

Every station in the world that covered the arraignment surely showed it.
