British actor Sir John Hurt has been diagnosed with early-stage pancreatic cancer. He released a statement today and said he and his medical team are 'optimistice about the outcome'.
Hurt is continuing to work and his next role will be as the real-life, hard-drinking London journalist Jeffrey Bernard - who had to undergo a leg amputation before his death - in the play 'Jeffrey Bernard is unwell'.

Sir John has enjoyed a successful career with notable roles including Quentin Crisp in The Naked Civil Servant, The Elephant Man and a recurring role in the Harry Potter films.
