"Charging documents state that 31-year-old Wilber Carter told detectives he had been drinking Sunday, while caring for his daughter. But, he told officers, when he woke up Monday afternoon he didn't remember where his car was parked or his daughter's whereabouts. He later found her unconscious in the car. No attorney is listed for Carter in online court records."

That poor baby! He is charged with murder and child abuse.

I am so disgusted and so angry....so sick of this happening to our precious babies....:furious:

On Father's Day...

So on Father's Day, this award winning father decides to get wasted, while caring for his two year old? I don't understand people. Did Mom know the father was an irresponsible drunk? She must be devastated.

Murder trial in Baltimore child's hot car death to begin

The murder trial of a 32-year-old Baltimore man accused of leaving his 2-year-old daughter strapped in a hot car for 16 hours after drinking last summer is set to begin with jury selection Tuesday morning.

Wilbert Carter faces second-degree murder, manslaughter, child abuse, second-degree assault and reckless endangerment charges and has been free on $250,000 bond since his arrest.

His daughter, Leasia Carter, was found on June 22, 2015 in the back of a Lincoln Town Car parked in the Belair-Edison neighborhood. She was suffering from second-degree burns and pronounced dead.

Assistant State's Attorney Anne Colt Leitess told jurors that 32-year-old Wilbert Leon Carter decided to drink, and continue drinking, while his daughter, Leasia Carter, was with him. He passed out and forgot about her, leaving her strapped to her car seat on a day when outside temperatures reached 89 degrees, Leitess said.

"We're here today because Wilbert Carter placed his needs above the needs of his own child," Leitess said. "The defendant didn't take her home to brush her teeth and put on her pajamas. Leasia was left behind in a car."

"There are tragic accidents we hear about every day," Leitess said. "This is no tragic accident. This was no mere mistake."

Carter's defense attorney, Margaret Mead, described him as a loving, doting father of three who had sole custody of Leasia and lived with his mother and aunt, who were always available to help care for her. She described him as a casual drinker but said he was having gin that night and lost control.

"There is no doubt in any way, shape or form that this little girl should not have died," Mead said. "But this was not a crime."

"I believe in justice and fairness," said Mead, visibly upset. "He was not convicted on what she (state) wanted him convicted of."

I'm sick of people describing fathers who kill or attempt to kill their children as "loving, doting father(s)" and "good providers." He will be getting 10 years at max. Will he have access to his remaining children afterwards? He should not be allowed to be alone with a child again as he is irresponsible. If he had strangled Leasia to death while he was drunk, would he have gotten the same leniency?

Baltimore father gets 8 years in prison for toddler's hot car death

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/crime/bs-md-ci-wilbert-carter-sentencing-20170213-story.html

A Baltimore father convicted of manslaughter for leaving his toddler in a hot car has been sentenced to eight years in prison, the State's Attorney's Office confirmed Monday.

Baltimore Circuit Judge Jeannie Hong sentenced Wilbert Carter, 32, on Thursday for the June 2015 death of 2 1/2 year old daughter Leasia, who he forgot was in her car seat after he returned from drinking with a relative.

His attorney Margaret Mead said she sought less prison time. "His two other daughters just adore him," Mead said. "It's such a tragedy, because everybody really suffers with this."

In December, Carter was convicted by a jury of manslaughter, reckless endangerment and confining an unattended child. He was acquitted of the most serious charge of second-degree depraved heart murder.
