A 52-year-old Redwater man has been sentenced to 38 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault of a child.
John Michael Cooper will have to serve at least half of the sentence before he is eligible for parole for the assault on the 11-year-old girl.
Judge Leon Pesek Jr. of the 202nd Judicial District Court in Bowie County handed down the sentence as part of a plea bargain with the victim and her family.
"We contacted the victim and her family to work out a plea bargain. This will help the victim and for her to get some closure. She also didn't have to testify," said a spokesman with District Attorney Bobby Lockhart's office.
"Justice was served," said the mother of the victim.
