Telegraph:

Murder hunt launched after death of infamous criminal
Convicted conman, John 'Goldfinger' Palmer was initially thought to have died as a result
of natural causes, but police now confirm they are treating his death as a murder inquiry

John “Goldfinger” Palmer, one of Britain’s most notorious criminals, has become the latest underworld figure to fall victim to the “curse of Brink’s-MAT” after he was shot dead at his home.

Palmer, who was tried for melting down gold bars stolen in the £26 million theft of bullion and jewellery from a warehouse at Heathrow Airport, is the eighth person with close links to the 1983 robbery to be shot dead.
---
He was best known for his connection to the Brink’s-MAT heist, for which he was tried in 1987. He was said to have melted down bullion from the robbery in his back garden, but he denied knowing the bullion was stolen and was acquitted.

The Brink’s-MAT robbery was carried out by a gang of six, who had expected to find £3 million in cash but instead discovered three tonnes of gold in the warehouse owned by an American security company.

Only a small mention for John Palmer.

Leaked documents containing info on offshore companies, the Panama Papers, shows Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca helped launder money from the Brinks-Mat robbery.

[...]As early as 1986, Mossack had been tipped off that he was unwittingly acting as a director of a company that might be owned by those moving money for criminals involved in the heist. In an internal memo never intended to leave its Panamanian files, Mossack refers to the “famoso robo del depósito de Matt Brink en Londres”, and records how a well-meaning informant had telephoned to suggest Mossack should resign immediately from a front company the gangsters secretly controlled.

“The company itself has not behaved illegally,” Mossack noted, copying the memo to his partner, Ramón Fonseca. “But it could be that the company invested money through bank accounts and properties that was illegitimately sourced.” Despite the tipoff, Mossack did not resign immediately. Moreover, the lawyer became a trusted adviser to a Panamanian company controlled by Parry, the gang’s offshore launderer-in-chief, who went into hiding in Spain.

The Brink’s-Mat robbers and launderers included “Mad” Micky McAvoy, Brian “The Colonel” Robinson and Kenneth Noye, as well as Brian Reader, who at 76 was the ringleader in last year’s Hatton Garden heist, another record-breaking robbery. After the robbery, large amounts of bullion were crudely smelted by Noye and Reader at the former’s home in Kent before being sent to a scrap gold dealer, John “Goldfinger” Palmer, near Bath, for resmelting and onward sale into the bullion market in Sheffield.[...]

This is from a few weeks ago:

It is “almost inconceivable” that John “Goldfinger” Palmer was not involved in the Hatton Garden heist, a former Flying Squad commander said yesterday (THURS), as the notorious criminal’s partner branded his murder an “assassination”.

Roy Ramm, who spent 27 years with the Metropolitan Police, said Palmer’s links to a network of high profile criminals meant that any one of the major crimes in which he was implicated could have resulted in his fatal shooting.

But his connections and the timing of his gangland-style murder, which came just weeks after the Hatton Garden heist, are now said to form a significant part of the police investigation.

Mr Ramm, who testified against Palmer at his 2001 timeshare fraud trial, told The Telegraph: “If you look at the kind of criminal network that the Hatton Garden gang were part of, there is no reason to think that Palmer would not have been involved in trying to handle the stolen gold.

“Palmer was linked to (Kenneth) Noye, Noye to (Brian) Reader and Reader to (Terry) Perkins. Reader and Perkins were key members of the Hatton Garden team.”

A notorious conman who was shot dead last year had been under surveillance by secret intelligence officers for at least 16 years, the BBC has learned.

John "Goldfinger" Palmer, who was once described as Britain's richest criminal, was shot dead in the garden of his home in Essex in June 2015.

An operation, codenamed Alpine, had gathered intelligence on Palmer from RAF Spadeadam in Cumbria since 1999.

[...]

"The team there then collated the info together, and some of that intel was then used to inform police investigations into various parts of his criminal organisation," the officer said.

"We knew what police officers he had in his pocket, what other criminals he was mixing with, and using for various criminal enterprises."

THE will of murdered crime king John “Goldfinger” Palmer has been blocked by Spanish authorities determined to claw back millions of pounds alleged to have been stolen from timeshare investors.

Probate of his will has been contested over suspicion that the 64-year-old convicted fraudster and Brink’s-Mat gold smelter shot dead at his remote Essex home last year, still has millions squirrelled away in off-shore accounts.

Sources told The Sun how the decision has left his wife Marnie, 68, and their daughters Ella, 39, and Sarah, 32, without any income – while his long-term partner Christina Ketley remains in control of the family fortune.

Earlier this year, Marnie sold the Georgian home she formerly shared with Palmer, just outside Bath, for £1.2million, down-sizing to live in an £810,000 home in the area.

One source said : “Marnie has had to sell the house to make ends meet and the girls are getting nothing. Everything is in Christina’s hands.”

This is an old article on JP, but Patsy Adams is currently on trial for attempted murder. Can't find any real reporting on the trial, and I've no idea if he's involved in JP's murder.
________________

One name — or rather one ‘outfit’ — will almost certainly feature in the murder investigation: the Adams family, from North London.

Possibly this country’s most feared crime syndicate, they have been linked to more than 25 killings, many of them fuelled by debts, ‘territorial’ disputes and perceived slights.

A key figure is Patrick ‘Patsy’ Adams, who remains on the run — believed to be in Spain or Holland — following the recent shooting of a rival in Islington.

More pertinently, the family are known to have a stake in the timeshare business in Tenerife.
In 2001, it was said that a member of the family had taken out a contract on Palmer. Police launched a covert operation to tail him to establish if he was being followed or under threat.

Finally, they decided they had no choice but to inform him that a price had been placed on his head. Palmer is understood to have declined any offer of police protection. Might that contract still have been active?

Brother of crime boss appears in court with wife accused of murder bid - Court News UK

* The brother of a former underworld crime boss appeared in court with his wife today (tues) accused of gunning down a driver at the wheel of his car. Patrick ‘Patsy’ Adams, 60, and Constance Adams,...

My mistake, that was a preliminary hearing for Patsy Adams. Looks like his trial took place early December and was sentenced to 9 years for pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Eligible for parole in 3.5 years with time served.

How intentionally shooting someone in the chest isn't attempted murder I'll never know.

Old article which touches on how the Adams Family have escaped justice through bribery and intimidation in the past. Not saying that has happened here, but he seems to have got off lightly.

A 50-year-old man has been questioned on suspicion of the murder of notorious Solihull gangster John “Goldfinger” Palmer.

The 65-year-old was found dead in the garden of his gated home in Brentwood, Essex in June 2015.

Police said they had questioned a man originally from Tyneside but currently living in southern Spain.

Although Essex Police originally thought he died of natural causes, it emerged he had been shot six times.

An inquest held in Chelmsford on December 20, heard that two police officers went to the house on June 24, and initially the death was treated as non-suspicious.

A post-mortem examination was started on Mr Palmer’s body on June 29 but was stopped when additional injuries were identified and it appeared the cause of death could be suspicious.

The examination later established he had been shot six times with a weapon believed to be a handgun.

But there was another crucial lead. Essex police combed through 70 pages of transcripts of conversations recorded by police monitoring a gang suspected of carrying out the notorious Hatton Garden safety deposit raid in April 2015. They found clear evidence that Palmer had links with the raid, as well as being an associate of elderly ringleader Brian Reader.

But I can now reveal that it was the Hatton Garden job – and the role played by the mysterious ‘Basil’, the only member of the gang never to be caught – that cleared Palmer’s arch enemies, the London crime family, from any involvement in his death.

One of Palmer’s associates explained: ‘John had tape recordings of the family talking about two murders they’d committed and had used them to keep them off his back. They were kept in a security box at the Hatton Garden deposit.’

Safecracker ‘Basil’ was a late addition to the Hatton Garden gang. He had one task – to recover Palmer’s incriminating tapes. In the days after the raid, Goldfinger was summoned to a meeting, where the family told him they now had the tapes – and demanded he pay them £1 million in cash every month to guarantee his safety.

‘He had no choice but to agree,’ the associate added. ‘Despite the rumours, the family are probably the least likely to have killed him. His death cost them millions.’
