"WINNIPEG – A woman with what appeared to be serious face and chest wounds was taken to hospital following an explosion at a law office on River Avenue Friday morning. The building at 444 St. Mary Ave. in downtown Winnipeg was also being evacuated Friday afternoon.

The Midtown Bridge was shut down just before 1 p.m. as police expanded their crime scene following the morning explosion. River Avenue was closed from Harkness Avenue westward.

Winnipeg police spokesman Const. Eric Hofley said the evacuation of the St. Mary building may be linked to the explosion at Petersen King law offices at 252 River Ave. Tactical police officers could also be seen on St. Mary, which was closed at Vaughan Street."

"Investigators did not know how the device ended up at the law firm, which several websites suggested specializes in family law.

“I am not sure how this device came to be in her possession, whether it was mailed or dropped off or something like that,” Hofley said.

“At this point, it certainly does appear that however it came into her possession, it was an explosive device that was triggered inadvertently by this woman.”

There was some damage to a window in the building, but there were no reports of anyone else being hurt.

Police have taped off the building and blocked traffic around it while the bomb squad ensured there were no other devices"

So, it sounds like the explosion was at one location (Petersen King law office at 252 River Ave., near the Midtown Bridge) and the evacuation of an office building was at another location (444 St. Mary Ave). The second location "self-evacuated" and wasn't ordered to do so by police.

"Hofley said he could not confirm if the two incidents are related."

Mitousis is the girlfriend of disbarred lawyer Barry Gorlick, who was recently banned from practicing law after numerous allegations of professional misconduct spanning 20 years.

At about 12:30 p.m., the building at 444 St. Mary Ave. downtown was voluntarily evacuated, then fully evacuated around 1:45 p.m. Gorlick’s former office at Monk Goodwin LLP is on the eighth floor. He could not immediately be reached for comment.

Aha. Gorlick is the connection, it seems. The plot thickens.

Recently disbarred? Seems like the disbarment happened yesterday? Am I reading that right?

ETA: Correction - it looks like the hearing happened in the spring of this year, but the media received a copy of the decision just this week. Hmmm....

Barry Gorlick was handed the most serious sanction available by the Law Society of Manitoba following a lengthy hearing in the spring. The Free Press obtained a written copy of its 23-page decision that was released this week.

"Originally, floors 7-9 had been evacuated. A directory in the building showed the seventh floor belonged to Campbell, Gunn, Inness attorneys and the eighth floor is occupied by Monk Goodwin, also a law office.

Workers on other floors originally were not told the reason for the selective evacuation and passersby were allowed to walk in, out, and around the building.

Hofley didn’t know what position the woman held at the firm"

What's odd is that the hearing was in the spring so the decision isn't new. However, the media reporting the decision is new. The other thing that is perplexing is that Gorlick admitted his wrong-doings.

Total speculation here, but he did mention that the breakup of his marriage lead to his downward spiral of deceit. Could someone be blaming his girlfriend for that? (If so, it's rather an obvious move that the perp is likely to be caught quickly.)

Curious case.

I am truly hoping this is untrue..

One source said Mitousis lost one hand in the blast and was in danger of losing the other one

Hoping this woman does not have to lose her hands, my gosh that is just awful, she seems like a lovely person, her family, friends and co-workers, must be freaked right out!
from the link..

"Mitousis describes herself on Twitter as "an active member of the Greek community" and her LinkedIn profile says she was on the board of the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church for five years.

It also says she is a board member of the Hellenic Professional Association of Manitoba, which she says promotes Greek culture in the province and mentors youth in the Greek community."

Family law? Could be any number of disgruntled clients or people on the other side of the court room in divorces, child custody cases - emotions run very high.
Pray for her best recovery possible.

"Winnipeg lawyer Maria Mitousis, 35, injured by bomb in law office"

"Mitousis's romantic partner, Barry Gorlick, was also in the news on Friday when it was revealed that he has been disbarred.

Gorlick admitted to 15 counts of professional misconduct, including failing to serve a client and misappropriating funds.

He was a subject of a 2014 CBC Go Public investigation in which a client said she paid $5,000 for Gorlick to file a lawsuit, which was never filed.

Gorlick has never worked at Petersen King, the law firm where Friday's explosion took place, but he and Mitousis used to work at Monk Goodwin.

Police have not confirmed if Gorlick or Mitousis or anyone else was the intended target of the explosive device".

Complicated stuff, imo.

"Petersen King is described as a boutique family law firm on the Internet.

One of its former partners was Jack King, the now-deceased husband of former Court of Queen's Bench Justice Lori Douglas.

King pleaded guilty to professional misconduct and had a reprimand placed on his file in 2011 after he admitted he had tried to convince a client in 2003 to have sex with Douglas, who was then a lawyer with King at another firm. That client, Alexander Chapman, would later file a complaint with the Canadian Judicial Council over nude photos of Douglas that King had shared. The council launched an inquiry that became bogged down in procedural wrangling and accusations of unfairness, and Douglas ended up retiring last year.

King helped establish the law firm after his misdeeds in 2003 and enjoyed the last decade of his career there, according to his obituary".
