"The suspicious death of a 29-year-old woman in May has now been ruled a homicide.

The body of Nellie Angutiguluk, an Inuit woman originally from Nunavik, was found inside an apartment in Côte-des-Neiges on May 18.

"Investigators are reaching out to the public in order to connect with anyone who has information about the victim, Miss Angutiguluk," said Montreal Police Const. Abdullah Emran.

Angutiguluk was a regular visitor at The Open Door, a drop-in centre in downtown Montreal.

The organization's director, Caleb Clark, said staff members were shocked when she died, because despite problems with addiction, she wasn't living on the street and seemed to be doing well.

"Every time she came into the centre, she was wanting prayer and spiritual counseling," Clark said.

"The majority of our actions were based around her faith."

"Nellie Angutiguluk, Inuk woman killed in Montreal, remembered as kind, generous soul"

"Nellie (Angutiguluk), she was a quiet, kind, sweet individual. Maybe a bit naive and maybe she fell in with the wrong crowd but she was a good person. It hurt everyone to hear that she was killed, it rattles you to hear that.”

Clark said she came to the Anglican Church regularly to pray and seek religious counsel. She had two children and, in the weeks before her death, Angutiguluk’s mom flew into Montreal and stayed with her.

“They had some good bonding time,” Clark said. “Finding out about the homicide ripped open a wound in this community … But it would be wrong to think of (Angutiguluk) and the women who come to Montreal as victims. Just the notion of getting on that plane and leaving the only community you’ve ever known to strive for something better, that right there takes a lot of courage. And sometimes it’s women who leave their entire family behind just with the hope of something better.”

Three weeks after he allegedly killed his girlfriend because she wasn’t paying her share of the rent, Kwasi Alfred Benjamin showed up at a memorial for Nellie Angutiguluk accompanied by a woman he introduced as his “new girlfriend.”

The chilling detail was part of the opening statement made by prosecutor Dennis Galiatsatos at the start of Benjamin’s second-degree murder trial at the Montreal courthouse on Monday. A jury composed of six men and six women is expected to hear evidence in the case during the next four weeks.

Angutiguluk, 29, an Inuk woman originally from Nunavik, was killed in an apartment in Côte-des-Neiges at some point during the Victoria Day weekend in May 2015. Galiatsatos told the jury it will hear evidence that the couple argued throughout the long weekend over money.
