Authorities this afternoon were seeking to determine if the dismembered remains of a man, found in the trunk of a car in a Rosemont parking garage, were those of a Purdue University graduate student reported missing last week.

Meanwhile, authorities in Shanghai, China, are holding the student's wife on a passport violation, and police here are seeking to have her returned to the U.S. so they can question her about her husband's disappearance.

The investigation began Tuesday when Rosemont police discovered human remains in five black plastic garbage bags and a dark-colored canvas bag, similar to a duffel, in a maroon 1997 Buick Century.

The vehicle had been left in a municipal parking garage at 9441 W. Devon Ave., next to City Hall and the Police Department. Officers went to the garage after a man reported a foul odor coming from the car.

An autopsy today determined the man had died of a gunshot wound to the head, an apparent homicide victim, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

"The (body) parts are so badly decomposed, it's like a skeleton," said a spokesman for the medical examiner's office.

He's wife, Danlei Chen, also 28, is wanted on an arrest warrant, charged by Purdue University police with having tried to kill her husband last December, Withers said. The warrant was issued after Chen missed a court date last Friday.

Tippecanoe County, Ind., prosecutors filed the attempted murder charge against Chen after she allegedly stabbed her husband at their home on Christmas Day, the Purdue news service reported.

How in the world can one human being cut another human being into pieces?
I just can't even imagine it. That wife must have had some help. Because she is being detained for a passport violation China can give her the boot and have LE fly back with her. Then she can be arrested for murder when she gets back in the USA. She tried to kill him before this!!! I think the wife had someone else kill him and cut him up because it seems to me the husband would have stayed 50 miles away from her. What a cold blooded bitsh.

Human remains found inside the trunk of a parked car in this Chicago suburb might be those of a missing Purdue University graduate student, authorities said.

Detectives found several bags containing the human body parts Tuesday in the trunk of a 1997 Buick Century parked in a municipal garage in Rosemont. Police said the car was registered to Lei He, 28, and his wife, Danlei Chen, 28, of West Lafayette, Indiana.

The Cook County medical examiner's office ruled the man's death a homicide Wednesday and said he died of a gunshot wound to the head. The autopsy was unable to confirm his identity.

Further testing must be conducted to identify the body.

Detectives searched the couple's residence at Purdue's married student housing complex on Tuesday and found a crime scene they believe is related to the human remains, police said.

Friends of a Purdue University graduate student found dead inside a car trunk in Rosemont are raising money to bring his parents to the United States for a visit.

Dismembered remains found in August near O'Hare Airport were identified as those of Lei He, 28, a graduate student in mechanical engineering.

Members of the Purdue Chinese Student and Scholar Association hope to raise at least $3,000 to bring Jianchen He and Yuhau Fang to West Lafayette so they can meet some of their late son's friends and colleagues. The money would also be used to send their son's remains and belongings back to Shanghai.

A Purdue University graduate student's wife likely will be prosecuted in China on charges she killed her husband in Indiana and then used his passport to enter the Asian country.
Whether Danlei Chen, 28, is tried in China for the death of her husband, Lei He's, 28, hinges on the results of a psychological examination requested by her attorney, a Chinese public security official said. She is being held in Shanghai.

"If we do not find any psychological problems, we will prosecute in compliance with Chinese criminal law -- definitely," Zhang Guiyong, division chief of the Ministry of Public Security in Beijing, said through an interpreter.
If convicted of homicide under Chinese law, Danlei Chen could face penalties ranging from three years in prison to death, depending on the circumstances of the crime, the Journal and Courier reported.
The U.S. does not have an extradition treaty with China. Zhang said it was not clear if police from Indiana might be asked to testify.

A former Purdue University graduate student has been sentenced to death for murdering her husband in Indiana and hiding his dismembered body in the trunk of a car, state media said Wednesday.

Shanghai's No. 1 Intermediate court sentenced Danlei Chen, 29, to death with a two-year reprieve on Monday, the People's Daily newspaper said. Such sentences are routinely commuted to life in prison if the inmate is cooperative...

Chen told the court she bought a gun for $300 on Aug. 18, 2005, and shot her husband in the back of the head on the morning of Aug. 20 after he insisted on a divorce.
