Although Japan's known for paying a lot for beautifully presented, expensive fresh fruit, a bunch of 26 grapes has smashed all previous records at the season's first auction in Kanazawa, north-west of Tokyo. The bunch of ping-pong sized 'Ruby Roman' grapes went for $8,200.
With 26 fruits in the bunch, that works out at an eye-popping $315 per grape. The winning bidder, head chef of local hotel the Nikko, told reporters he had been under strict orders to win the auction at any cost.
