A kind neighbor checking on a couple in central Phoenix discovered a horrifying scene; the man was standing inside with his arm severed and an eye gouged out.
Police later found a dead, decapitated woman in the room and two decapitated dogs and knives in a closet. The man's wounds were self-inflicted, investigators say.

The neighbor told media the couple had met in a mental health facility.

Like every other day I go check on them,” said Loney. “They are mentally ill. went to go check on him…he answered the door; he was naked and there was blood everywhere, so I called the cops.”

Phoenix police say when they arrived at the home near 13th place and Colter Street, they saw that the 43-year-old suspect had cut off his own arm...and he was missing an eye.

This makes me sad and angry. And then even angrier.

Crump wouldn't specify the relationship between the suspect and the woman, but said that the man has a "known mental illness" and that police have received calls to the apartment regarding the female victim and suspect.

"These two have a history of a domestic-violence relationship," he said.

Kenneth Wakefield has been identified as the suspect. He's just been released from hospital and is in custody charged with one count of first degree murder and two counts of animal cruelty. Bond is set at $2 million. 49-year-old Trina Heisch is the wife he is accused of beheading.

I think it's safe to say reports of Wakefield gouging out his own eye were true.

An April 14 trial has been set for a man accused of decapitating his wife and two dogs at their Phoenix apartment...

Heisch and Wakefield met while they were each serving 10-year sentences in the mental hospital for separate stabbings of relatives.

A Phoenix man accused of decapitating his wife and their two dogs in 2015 before mutilating himself has pleaded guilty to murder and animal cruelty charges.

The plea deal reached Tuesday recommends a 29-year prison sentence for Kenneth Wakefield in the 2015 death of Trina Heisch.

Sentencing is currently scheduled for April 6th.

Phoenix man who beheaded wife and dogs gets 29 years in prison

Kenneth Wakefield sobbed as he listened to his wife Trina Heisch's mother describe her daughter and the "hole" left in her heart after Heisch's murder.

"They say it gets easier, but it doesn't," Peggy Stowe told Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Ronda Fisk. "I cry every night."

Stowe said though Heisch "had her problems," she was always there for her family.

"I just wanted to say I'm sorry. I deeply apologize for what I did," Wakefield said, who described his deceased wife as his "best friend." "I can't change it. I suffer also."

Judge Ronda Fisk said she believed Wakefield was sincerely remorseful but considering the "heinous, cruel manner" of the case, she would follow the recommendation of his plea agreement for a 29-year sentence. Wakefield pleaded guilty in February to second-degree murder and two animal cruelty charges.

Wakefield must immediately begin serving 25 years for the July 2015 death of 49-year-old Trina Heisch and consecutive two-year sentences for each dog's death.
