New article: Sheriff says he's convinced DeOrr Kunz was not abducted Published: Jul 31, 2015 at 12:20 PM MDT

http://www.kboi2.com/news/local/DeOrr-Kunz-Missing-Idaho-320303121.html

Lemhi County Sheriff Lynn Bowerman says he's convinced an Idaho toddler missing for three weeks was not abducted. Although he's convinced the 2-year-old was not abducted, Bowerman said he's unable to rule out the possibility.

The sheriff also said on Friday that the FBI is sending a team of investigators to assist the Lemhi County Sheriff's office who will be checking the sheriff's office interviews and may re-interview some people to make sure deputies didn't miss anything.

It’s been three weeks since DeOrr Kunz Jr. disappeared and his parents said Friday they believe he is still alive.

“We continue to hope and pray that our ‘lil man’ will be found soon,” Jessica Mitchell and DeOrr Kunz Sr., DeOrr’s parents, said in a short written statement to EastIdahoNews.com.

DeOrr’s parents confirm they have been in contact with the FBI and, according to Kunz, investigators have searched their house and vehicles.

DeOrr Kunz Jr. National Tip Hotline

(888) 852-6505

IDAHO FALLS – The family of missing Idaho Falls toddler DeOrr Kunz Jr. is working with a private investigator to help find their son.
Frank Vilt, a retired U.S. Marshal with years of law enforcement experience, said he’s been conducting his own investigation into DeOrr’s disappearance and he believes the two-year-old was kidnapped.
“I feel that he was abducted,” Vilt said in an interview with EastIdahoNews.com Tuesday. “Everything points to an abduction.”
Vilt speaks daily with DeOrr’s parents, DeOrr Kunz Sr. and Jessica Mitchell. He said the couple has cooperated fully with law enforcement.
“I’ve talked to Lemhi County deputies and I’ve talked to Bonneville County,” Vilt said. “The parents are being very forthright and have nothing to hide.”
Vilt has visited the Leadore campground where DeOrr was last seen. He’s also spoken with folks who live near the area and says he shares his tips with law enforcement. Just days ago he learned something he believes may be useful in the case.
“When [the family] went into town the morning after they arrived, they picked a few groceries up and bought some French fries for DeOrr Jr.,” Vilt said. “There was a man who was staring at DeOrr and this made Jessica feel kind of eery. I’m looking into it.”
Vilt says he has interviewed people registered on the sex offender list who live in Lemhi County and, according to him, all of them were cleared.
The private investigator has set up a national phone tip-line in hopes of finding DeOrr. The public is asked to call (888) 852-6505 with any information on his disappearance.
“I honestly believe in my heart of hearts that these are grieving parents and I want to hope that they feel like I feel, that somebody out there knows something,” Vilt said.

One of them was a tip from a woman who said she saw a boy matching DeOrr's description near Caldwell, Idaho. The boy was with a man in an older model tan Buick with Oklahoma license plates.

private detective Frank Vilt. Vilt said there have been several tips about a suspicious man nearby in Leadore and further away in Swan Valley, east of Idaho Falls.

The man is described as being in his 50s and having whitish, gray hair with curls at the bottom. He was driving a new-looking black Jeep Rubicon.

Kunz's mother recalls seeing the man at a store in Leadore the morning of her son's disappearance. Vilt said a couple reported seeing a similar-looking man July 18 -- first while hiking in the Palisades and later at a convenience store in Swan Valley.

The woman who saw the man in Swan Valley asked Local News 8 not to identify her, but she said the man "was just staring at my family, just watching us."

She said he kept looking at her husband and four children, including one Kunz's age.

Bonneville County Sheriff Paul Wilde and Lemhi County Chief Deputy Steve Penner want to make sure all tips regarding the case are directed to the Idaho State Police Fusion Center.

The sheriff's offices are concerned that if tips are directed solely to a private investigator, valuable information that could solve the case may be overlooked.

UNSOCIAL MEDIA: Law enforcement weigh benefits and drawbacks of social media
Updated at 10:38 am, September 29th, 2015
By: Tom Holm, Post Register

[...]
Facebook and Twitter can be excellent sources of mass information. But pinning down the truth in all that noise can be extremely difficult, especially for law enforcement in an active investigation.

[...]
Law enforcement has a tenuous relationship with social media. It can help in getting word out about missing teens, or a robbery suspect. But it can also be a mud-slinging arena where accusations fly and progress is hindered.

[...]
“Getting people involved to help look, if they’re the right type of people, it’s fantastic,” Bowerman said. “But then there’s people who their whole life is social media, and they’ll twist the things you say. It creates a bigger frenzy than it is; it’s really a struggle.”

[...]
When 2-year-old DeOrr Kunz, went missing in July in the Salmon-Challis National Forest, his office was pushed to the limit. His staff was overwhelmed, partially by their efforts to search, and almost equally by their attempts to quell the social media tips and comments that flooded in.
