A family in Pryor, Montana that passed and then returned to help a stranded motorist Wednesday were shot for their car, police say. The parents, who haven't been named, died, while their daughter was wounded.

The shooting happened after the parents spotted a car broken down on a road near the Crow Indian Reservation, went to their daughter's house and told her someone needed help. When the family returned, 18-year-old Jesus Deniz Mendoza pulled a gun on them, demanded cash and their car and then shot both the parents dead and wounded the daughter when they said they had none.

FBI agents say Mendoza said he shot the family as he was 'tired of waiting around' and the daughter had laughed at him. He's due to appear in court today.

Jesus Yeizon Deniz Mendoza, 18, told FBI agents he shot at the victims because he was "getting tired of waiting around and because the daughter laughed at him."

When officers arrived on scene, they saw the bodies of 50-year-old Jason Shane, Jr., of Pryor and his wife, 47-year-old Tana Rock Above Shane, lying face down on the ground.

Minutes before that, the surviving victim, their daughter, Jorah Shane, who is in her mid-20’s, told authorities that her mother came to the house and said she saw a man in need of help along the side of the road.

As she ran away, documents state she felt blood running down her face and felt a bullet hit her back. The blood running down her face was the result of a bullet wound to her head.

Much much more at link, in another article it mentioned he was going to shoot the cop that came to arrest him but that cop called for backup and didn't attempt the arrest alone.
 
This is such a sad and sickening crime. One of those stories that just hits you in the gut :( As with the murder of Kathryn Steinle this family would be alive had their killer - Mendoza - been deported to his native Mexico.
 
This makes me want to sell everything, go off the grid, and never deal with another human again.

My heart breaks for the family. Horrendous, senseless, random... where do you go after this? :(

US won't seek death in Crow Reservation double-killing
Federal prosecutors will not seek the death penalty against a Wyoming teenager accused of killing a couple who authorities said stopped to help him on the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana, the U.S. Justice Department announced Friday.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch decided against seeking capital punishment in the case of Jesus Deniz Mendoza after consulting with federal prosecutors in Montana, the agency said in a one-sentence statement.

This case makes me so sad. This is exactly how my husband is. He turns his car around to help stranded people. He always goes out of his way and is very trusting. This case just kills me...:sigh:

A Wyoming man has agreed to plead guilty to second-degree murder charges and other crimes in the July 2015 shooting of a Pryor couple who had stopped on a nearby road to help him.

A plea agreement filed on Thursday in U.S. District Court in Billings said Jesus Yeizon Deniz Mendoza, 19, of Worland, will plead guilty to two counts of second-degree murder, assault with intent to commit murder, three counts of using a firearm in a crime of violence and assault with a dangerous weapon.

The agreement calls for the prosecutor to seek consecutive life and maximum sentences.

Mendoza’s attorney, Assistant Federal Defender David Merchant, filed a motion Thursday for Mendoza to change his plea to guilty.

U.S. District Judge Susan Watters set the plea change hearing for March 7.

Jesus Deniz Mendoza, 19, faces life in prison under an agreement reached last month with federal prosecutors in which he acknowledged killing Jason and Tana Shane and wounding their daughter in July 2015. Mendoza was 18 at the time.

"I was pulled over by the side of the road and some Native Americans came and assisted me," Mendoza testified Tuesday. "I knowingly shot them, got in their car and drove away."

Mendoza also acknowledged that he returned later in the Shanes' car and shot at three people who had responded to the initial gunshots and the daughter's calls for help.

He offered no motive but told FBI agents after his arrest that he shot the victims because he was "getting tired of waiting around and because the daughter laughed at him," according to court documents.

U.S. District Judge Susan Watters has the final decision on sentencing, set for Aug. 10. There is no parole in the federal criminal justice system

Federal prosecutors are seeking life sentences plus a mandatory 60 years on gun crimes for a Wyoming man convicted of murdering a Pryor couple who had stopped to help him and assaulting their daughter along the road in 2015.

Jesus Yeizon Deniz Mendoza, 20, of Worland, Wyoming, is set to be sentenced on Thursday in U.S. District Court in Billings.

Mendoza’s defense attorney is recommending Mendoza be sentenced to four days for the assaults plus the mandatory 60 years saying that would be a “fair and just sentence.”

A judge sentenced a 20-year-old man to life in prison Thursday for killing a couple who stopped to help him alongside a road on Montana's Crow Indian Reservation.

In addition to the life sentence, Mendoza received 60 years for several weapons charges and was ordered to pay $12,713 in restitution to the victims.

Jason Shane's mother, Clara Hugs, wept as she told the court that Mendoza had robbed her grandchildren of their parents. Others said the shootings had traumatized the entire Crow community and caused lasting sorrow.

Despite the abuse Mendoza suffered as a young child, the judge noted that he had been adopted at age 4 and had a good upbringing after that. She said that if he had his way, there would have been six people dead that day in the city of Pryor.

David Merchant, Mendoza’s defense attorney, requested a sentence of 60 years plus one day each for the two murder victims, their daughter who was shot, and the collective other victims who were fired upon by Mendoza.

“To say the lives of Jason and Tana Shane are worth one day each is grossly insufficient,” said John Sullivan, the prosecutor.

Judge Susan Watters agreed, calling Mendoza’s crimes among the worst she had ever seen as a judge.

“(The victims) acted as everyone hopes people in their community would act,” said Watters.....“You repaid their kindness by executing them.”
