JERUSALEM — A teenage girl seriously wounded after an anti-gay extremist stabbed her and several others in last week’s attack on Jerusalem’s gay pride parade died Sunday, a hospital official.

Shira Banki, 16, succumbed to her wounds, and her organs will be donated, Hadassah Medical Center spokeswoman Hadar Elboim said.

The girl was among six people wounded Thursday by an ultra-Orthodox Jewish man, Yishai Schlissel, who had carried out a similar attack on a gay pride parade in 2005. He had angrily spoken out against the parade after his release from prison three weeks earlier".

"We won't permit the terrible murderer to challenge the basic values on which Israeli society is built," he said. We reject with disgust any attempt to impose hatred and violence among us and will bring the murderer to justice.

"Shira was murdered because she bravely supported the principle that everyone has the right to live their lives respectfully and with security."

The annual parade in Jerusalem, which drew about 5,000 this year, has long been a focus of tension between Israel's predominant secular majority and the Ultra-Orthodox Jewish minority, who object to public displays of homosexuality."

"Hours after Shira Banki died, a vigil was held for her near the place she was stabbed, attended by hundreds of mourners - among them school friends, teachers, members of the gay community and supporters.

Dramatic images of Thursday's attack in Jerusalem showed the suspect reaching inside his coat and raising a knife above his head.

He then began stabbing marchers while screaming, before being tackled by a police officer"

On Saturday night, thousands of Israelis gathered in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv to rally for tolerance. The twin demonstrations followed a weekend of violence that left a 16-year-old Israeli woman and a Palestinian toddler dead—the former stabbed at Jerusalem’s gay pride parade by an ultra-Orthodox man, and the latter burned to death in his home by suspected Jewish terrorists. The gatherings were addressed by many politicians and cultural leaders, including Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and his predecessor Shimon Peres, who each spoke powerfully about the need to fight extremism. But perhaps one of the most moving speeches of the evening came from an unlikely source: an Orthodox rabbi named Benny Lau.

Lau, the nephew of a former Israeli chief rabbi (and cousin of a current one), leads a modern Orthodox congregation in South Jerusalem, and is known for his efforts to bridge the country’s wide secular-religious divide. Standing in Zion Square before hundreds of rainbow flags, he forcefully denounced those who use religious Judaism as justification for their homophobia and hatred. more at link: http://www.tabletmag.com/scroll/192...ed+in+the+Name+of+God&utm_campaign=august2015

The Jerusalem District Court on Sunday sentenced to life behind bars Yishai Schlissel, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish man convicted of stabbing to death 16-year-old Shira Banki at the Jerusalem Gay Pride Parade last year.

Schlissel was given another 30 years in prison for attempted murders of the six other people he injured in the attack, and another year for breaking the terms of his release from prison for a similar stabbing attack he carried out in 2005...

In April, Schlissel was convicted of Banki’s murder, six counts of attempted murder for the injuries he caused other people during the attack, and aggravated assault.

During the trial, the court said police knew of the potential threat but failed to prevent it.
