When Life St George Hospital in Port Elizabeth, South Africa finally allowed oncology nurse manager Nicci Joubert to bring therapy dogs into her oncology ward, it proved more successful than anyone could imagine.

A handsome Italian German Shepherd (if that makes sense :) ) service dog named Fabio wowed patient Marie Scott (pictured) by climbing onto her bed for a hug, then caused a really heartwarming moment. Staff had decided not to disturb patient Maria Malan, who had barely regained consciousness after a serious stroke which had left her unmoving and unable to speak. But when she spotted Fabio she managed to raise her hand enough to let them know she wanted a visit too, and when Fabio arrived at her bedside she managed to stroke his head though she could barely lift her hand.

Many of the nurses were reduced to tears by the moment.

Fabio belongs to Monique Maritz, an amputee who has inspired the local Algoa Bay German Shepherd Club to volunteer their dogs' services at the hospital, which is the first in South Africa to try dog therapy.
