Sometime before Hatcher arrived home, the driver of a Jeep Cherokee followed another driver into the garage and parked, according to Sgt. Max Geron, with the Dallas Police Department's Crimes Against Persons Division.

While Hatcher parked, Geron said, someone got out of the Cherokee and appeared to approach Hatcher. Police said witnesses then described hearing a gunshot and the person who exited the Cherokee then returned to the vehicle and drove away.

[...]
"We believe that the occupant or occupants of that vehicle have information that would be of benefit to detectives investigating the case," Geron said. "I'll stop short of even saying that that individual was the one that fired the shots. We simply don't know -- we don't have a motive at this point."

Geron would not specify how many shots were fired and would not comment on what gender the person who exited the Cherokee appeared to be.

News of a homicide in Dallas had many people in central Illinois reeling Thursday.

Lisa Sato, Hatcher's aunt, said Hatcher viewed Springfield as her hometown, and the family plans to have her buried here. She described Hatcher as a very smart, driven, beautiful and loving person.

Right now, everyone is still stunned about what happened, she said.

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Dallas Police announced the arrest early Saturday of a 22-year-old woman in the murder of Uptown dentist Dr. Kendra Hatcher.
Crystal Cortez is being held on a $250,000 bond.

“Arrestee Crystal has admitted her involvement in the murder and has given detectives information that other unidentified suspects may have been involved,” said Dallas Police Senior Corporal Melinda Gutierrez.

An arrest warrant affidavit released by Dallas Police indicates a person contacted a DPD officer after seeing pictures of his Jeep Cherokee on local news reports in relation to the murder.

RE Witnesses:

One of the first witnesses to come forward was a man inside the apartment parking garage. The man, who doesn’t want to be identified, said he heard Dr. Hatcher scream, heard gunfire, and then saw a white man hurry from the garage and get into a beat up black Jeep Cherokee. The witness said the man was wearing a black hoodie and had it pulled forward to cover his face.

As Hatcher parked, a figure emerged from a nearby Jeep Cherokee and appeared to approach her. Witnesses described hearing a gunshot and saw the figure getting back into the Cherokee and driving away, police said.

"First, it was a loud scream and then a 'Boom,'" the father said. "And he didn't hear anything after that."

That's what the man says his son heard when 35-year-old Kendra Hatcher was gunned down inside the garage at her residence, the Gables Park 17 apartments on Cedar Springs Road. The witness is a teenager and his father wants to keep both of their identities concealed since the killer is still on the loose.

New details from the earwitness and his son:

A neighbor who didn't want to be identified recalled what he saw and heard the night Hatcher, 35, was shot dead inside her parking garage at the Gables Park 17 apartments.

The man said when he heard the gun go off he was headed for the elevators and thought someone had either dropped something heavy or slammed a door.

"I heard the shot, I didn't think much of it," he said.

It wasn't until his son, who was also in the garage, called frantically that he confirmed something horrible had just happened.

"He told me a lady just got shot in our parking lot," he said.

The neighbor rushed back down and saw Hatcher, still wearing her black scrubs, laying near her car.

"She was not breathing so we figured ... we backed off and waited for the cops," he said.

Once police arrived, he said they described seeing the black Jeep Cherokee. The arrest warrant affidavit identifies Cortez as the driver of that SUV.

Last night the cops came, took my little nephew out of my mom’s custody claiming that he was involved in this,” Aguilar said.

Dallas Police would not comment on whether they interviewed Cortes’ son, but a spokesperson for the Department of Family and Protective Services confirms the boy is in protective custody.

“He is a very intelligent kid, so he would tell them exactly if he was in the car, he would tell them exactly what happened,” Aguilar said.

[...]
Cortes’ brother Eric Garcia believes his sister was a small part of a much bigger conspiracy.

“You know she didn’t rob anybody. She was just the driver. I don’t know if she knows what she was doing, or if she got threatened to do it,” Garcia said.

[...]
“If she was involved with this like they say, we do want her to come forward to come clean and let them know who else was involved in it, who else set it up, who else was… who actually was the shooter,” Aguilar said.

Cortes claims she thought it was just a robbery and drove an unidentified man to Hatcher's apartment that night. She also said the man she drove is the shooter and took several items from Hatcher.

With these revelations, there could be two more people involved in the murder who have not been arrested – the ex-girlfriend and the mysterious man who Cortes claims killed Hatcher.

Police say they have confirmed parts of Cortes' story by looking at surveillance video and talking to witnesses.
