"A man who was found not criminally responsible in the 2010 beheading of his mother is missing and police are warning that he’s a “danger to himself and others.”

Thomas Brailsford, 55, was last seen on Thursday near Jane Street and Bloor Street West at around 2:30 p.m. He was wearing a black shirt with black pants and black shoes.

He’s described as six foot two, 215 pounds. He’s balding with blue eyes and wears glasses".

There is so much wrong with this story/situation that I am not sure where to begin.

And Bluesneakers....curious, but would there have been a GOOD time to read this?

Lemme get this straight. He was granted a day pass and he is legally insane? I did not see the word 'insane' but what else does not criminally responsible mean?

Gee whiz this is crazy. Sure am glad it's not October. Boo! :hills:

ETA:
I just googled Thomas and found this....BTW this is September 2014
A man who was found not criminally responsible for the beheading death of his mother has been located by police, two days after he escaped from a mental health centre in downtown Toronto.

Thomas Brailsford, 54, was given a day pass to leave the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health on Monday morning, then failed to return to the Queen Street West campus.

When he was reported missing, police said they were concerned for his safety.

I hope they find him quickly and then cease to give him any more day passes.

"This isn’t the first time he slipped out of CAMH’s grasp. He did the same thing back in 2014.

Does this highlight a potentially deadly weakness in the “not criminally responsible” ruling? Should somebody who BEHEADED another human being be allowed out and about without any supervision? Is it fair to allow somebody who can’t control their darker actions out in public?"

During daylight hours would have been better. :)

I would really like to know the name of the person, and their title, that gave gave this 'not criminally responsible' person a day pass from incarceration in 2014 - 4 years after beheading his mother. Don't the people 'running' these institutions realize that such people will lie to them for freedom? Did this person think a few meds made all the difference in the world? Gotta give that a D for 'duh'.

Regarding the article linked in post #4 - fwiw I find it ironic that the article states he 'escaped' from a mental health centre in 2014 - no he didn't, he was allowed to leave - under the assumption he would wander back at the time specified in his day pass. Did the author of that article not pick up on that detail? Gotta give that a double D.

Now it's time to find out whether he was given another day pass the other day - and if so, by whom. Or did he actually escape this time?

"A spokesperson with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) said he was being escorted to a medical appointment by one employee in a cab when he got out and ran away.

He was not restrained because CAMH officials didn’t feel he needed to be. If restraints are needed, CAMH calls in a third-party, such as police officers, to provide assistance."

I'm relieved he wasn't given another day pass to freely roam the city, but escaping like that isn't much better, is it? Not for him, for his escort, not for anyone. Where did he think he was going after he escaped? I imagine if he is sick a night on the street was likely frightening and unfamiliar. Ugh. This could have been much worse.

"What do we do with the most broken, most dangerous people in our society?

We send them to a resort-style psychiatric hospital on the shores of Georgian Bay where they live in dorm rooms with nurses serving as both caregivers and jailers.

Staff at Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care, who spoke to the Toronto Sun on condition of anonymity, say there’s always been an element of danger working with killers, rapists and other violent characters in the province’s only all-male maximum security forensic hospital.

But after moving into a new building known as the Atrium, which has been plagued by safety and security problems since it opened in May 2014, they now fear for their lives.

“I go to work every day not knowing if I’ll make it home safely,” a registered practical nurse (RPN) said."

Maybe he does not need to leave the facility for appointments in the fall season. He is just a little too frisky in September. Whatever happened to doctors, therapists, etc., being on site for precancerous, mentally ill souls??

"A man with an history of violence against women is missing from Ontario Shores centre for Mental Health Sciences in Whitby.

Durham regional police say George May, 55, left the centre around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and never returned. It is believed he may have left on the Whitby Go train to head westbound.
The report says he was charged with second-degree murder for strangling a woman and was found not criminally responsible in 2002."

"In 2012, May also went missing, leaving the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, but then returned on his own the next day. At the time, police issued a release saying May had a history of violence against women and would pose a danger to the public.

This is the second time in the past two weeks that a patient has gone missing from an Ontario psychiatric facility. Thomas Brailsford, 55, who was found not criminally responsible in the 2010 beheading of his mother, was found after he was missing for a day in Toronto more than a week ago."

LOCATED!

"Toronto police officers found him in the Mount Pleasant Road and St. Clair Avenue area."
