Elton John wants meeting with President Putin over 'stupid' remarks

Elton John has said he wants a meeting with Russia's President Putin over his 'ridiculous' stance on gay rights and 'stupid' remarks that visitors to the winter Olympics in Russia should 'leave the children in peace'.

The singer extended the offer of talks after speaking at a conference in neighbouring Ukraine, where he met with President Petro Poroshenko to lobby him about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights.

The star thanked Poroshenko after meeting with him, saying on Instagram: After speaking at the YES Ukraine 2015 Conference today in Kiev, I met with Ukraine President Poroshenko about the importance of legislative changes to support LGBT rights.

Meanwhile, two infamous Russian pranksters say they made the call.

Alexei “Lexus” Stolyarov and Vladimir “Vovan” Krasnov, who have prank-called many Russian and Ukrainian celebrities and politicians over the years, told newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda that they had called the British singer on Monday pretending to be the Russian president. The pair said that John, unaware he was being hoaxed, had told them that their call was the “most wonderful” he had ever received.

Seems a little mean and gloating to me, for a state-run TV station? It wouldn't run if President Putin didn't want it to, I suspect.

The duo claim the singer responded to the 11-minute call, which will air in full on state-owned Channel One during the Evening Urgant show tonight, by saying: “Thank You. You made my day. This day, and the conversation was the most wonderful and beautiful in my life.”

A Russian embassy official called Elton first, just to be sure there was no misunderstanding this time.
