"At least three dogs were found dead – two in a bloodied Jurupa Valley animal shelter – and at least a dozen more were missing Sunday after an apparent break-in at the facility, according to Riverside County Animal Services.

Although the shelter is closed Sundays to the public, its staff arrived around 6:30 a.m. to clean kennels, feed the animals and perform other routine duties. Upon arrival, several dogs were found roaming freely in the building, department spokesman John Welsh said."

Just terrible- those poor animals- as if being in a shelter wasn't bad enough...

There is now a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect.

A fourth missing dog has died, one of two set loose and later hit by vehicles. The two dogs killed in the shelter don't appear to have any bite wounds and there was blood splatter three feet up the walls.

Shelter employees were working with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department on the investigation and reviewing surveillance footage of the incident.

The video appeared to show a single man wearing dark clothing had broken in, according to Welsh. It was not known if the footage would be released or if a clear image of the man’s face was captured.

Seven dogs remain missing. I don't understand why so many shelters seem to lack fire or burglar alarms. I really, really hope this perp is caught.

The recovered dogs must be terrified being shut up there again after what they saw. Hope the shelter has a guard now. Preferably armed.

They are dogs...short term memory, thank goodness in this case.

This happened a while back at a Macon rescue kennel. Someone cut through the chainlink fence and released 12+ dogs, 3 or 4 ended up dead due to fights.

At first people were freaking out thinking it was done by dog fighters, turned out it was a local crazy/homeless woman, she wanted to "liberate" the dogs.

(And dogs don't have short term memories when it comes to traumatic events.)
