LOWER MORELAND >> A Huntingdon Valley man shot and killed during a home invasion around 11:10 p.m. Sunday was identified Monday as Kevin Brown.

[...]
“These folks were targeted,” Steele said. “This is not a situation where neighbors” should be concerned. “We don’t think it was random.”

D.A.: Slain Montco man was targeted

Steele declined to give a motive for the crime but said the public had no reason to worry even though the shooter remained at large.

Brown, who had three children, was in an upstairs bedroom of the twin home when he was shot, Steele said. He jumped from a second-story window and was on the front lawn when police arrived. He was taken to Abington Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Montgomery County Coroner's Office said Brown died of a gunshot wound to the neck.

Abdurrahman Amin, 19... the fourth suspect in the Sept. 27 slaying of a Huntingdon Valley man, was held over for trial following a preliminary hearing Tuesday... He was arrested Dec. 1 for his alleged part in the murder of Kevin Brown, 53, at his home in the 2300 block of Philmont Avenue.

The murder was allegedly in retaliation for Brown’s daughter’s breakup with Naadir Hanif Abdul-Ali, described in court documents as an abusive boyfriend. Abdul-Ali, 20... and Desmond “Dez” O. Smith, 20... were arrested in October and charged with second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, burglary, criminal trespass, aggravated assault, simple assault and related conspiracy charges, as well as weapons offenses.

Mujahid Mathews, 18, of the 1400 block of South 29th Street, Philadelphia, was arrested Nov. 2 on the same charges as Amin.

Though Pennsylvania law had already determined that Naadir Abdul-Ali would spend the rest of his life in prison for his second-degree murder conviction, Judge Thomas P. Rogers wanted to make it clear Tuesday that he felt Abdul-Ali deserved that mandated fate.

“He was cold, calculated and showed complete disregard for human life,” Rogers said, adding, “He should be denied freedom for the rest of his life.”

Abdul-Ali, 21, of Philadelphia, was sentenced to life without parole, along with an addition 10 to 20 years in prison for the Sept. 27, 2015 shooting death of Kevin Brown, who was killed inside of his home when several men broke into the house. Prosecutors say the break-in was retribution for Brown’s daughter ending a troubled relationship with Abdul-Ali.

1 pleads guilty, 3 head to trial in deadly Lower Moreland home invasion

As prosecutors prepared to begin the trial of four men who allegedly orchestrated a fatal Lower Moreland home invasion, one of the suspects admitted his role and agreed to testify against the rest.

Mujahid Mathews, 18, of the 1400 block of South 29th Street, Philadelphia, pleaded guilty in front of Montgomery County Judge Thomas P. Rogers to more than a dozen charges, including third-degree murder in connection to the Sept. 27 shooting death of Kevin Brown in his Lower Moreland home.

Prosecutors reduced the charge from second-degree murder, in return for Mathews agreeing to testify against co-defendants Naadir Abdul-Ali, Desmond Smith and Abdurrahman Amin. Deputy District Attorney Thomas W. McGoldrick told Mathews in court that if he refuses to testify, the Commonwealth would return to seeking a second-degree murder charge, which carries a possible sentence of life in prison.

Second man admits role in deadly Lower Moreland home invasion

A second defendant in the trial for a fatal Lower Moreland Township home invasion pleaded guilty Monday to third-degree murder after the fourth day of testimony.

Abdurrahman Amin, 20, of the 3000 block of Wharton Street, Philadelphia, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder in Montgomery County Court after the jury had been released for the day. Amin is one of four men charged in the killing of Kevin Brown during a home invasion. The trial will continue for charges against Naadir Abdul-Ali and Desmond Smith.

Mujahid Mathews pleaded guilty to third-degree murder, a reduced sentence from the second-degree murder charge that carries mandatory life in prison, and other charges before the trial began.

Philly man guilty, another acquitted, in Montco home-invasion slaying

A Montgomery County jury on Tuesday convicted a Philadelphia man in the murder of his ex-girlfriend's father, but acquitted a friend who also was on trial for the September home-invasion.

Naadir Abdul-Ali, 21, will serve a mandatory life sentence for his conviction of second-degree murder in the killing of Kevin Brown, of Lower Moreland Township.

Co-defendant Desmond Smith, 21, also of Philadelphia, walked smiling from the courtroom after he was acquitted of all charges. During the 11-day trial Smith's attorney presented an alibi defense and video footage from SEPTA's Market-Frankford line, suggesting that Smith was riding the train at the time of the murder.

And the jury believed it.

2nd Man Sentenced For Role In Deadly Home Invasion In Huntingdon Valley

Twenty-year-old Abdurrahman Amin is sentenced to 15-30 years in prison.

He pleaded guilty to 3rd degree murder days into the trial this summer. His attorney argued for a lesser sentence, saying Amin stayed downstairs as the rest of the group charged up the steps of the Philmont Avenue home, eventually shooting and killing 53-year-old Kevin Brown.

Prosecutor Tom McGoldrick disputes Amin’s limited role, but says if it were true, it wouldn’t matter.

“Even if you the lookout for instance, and you stay outside, you’re still guilty of second degree murder, you’re still guilty of participating in that home invasion.”

Accomplice in Lower Moreland murder sent to prison

Mujahid Mathews, 19, of South 29th Street, was sentenced in Montgomery County Court on Friday to 9½ to 19 years in a state correctional facility on a charge of third-degree murder in connection with the 11:10 p.m. Sept. 27, 2015, home invasion that resulted in the shooting death of Kevin Brown, who died while protecting his family from the invaders in his Philmont Avenue home.

“He was only 53 years old when he was executed. He was a hero in the true sense of the word,” Judge Thomas P. Rogers said about Brown. “This was a brutal, senseless and reprehensible act.”

The judge sentenced Mathews to an additional 30 years of probation following parole, meaning Mathews will be under court supervision for nearly 50 years.

Mathews was not the shooter but was described by Deputy District Attorney Thomas McGoldrick as “the extra muscle” who helped triggerman Naadir Abdul-Ali carry out the home invasion.

“I can only imagine the terror inside that house. The pain and suffering this family has gone through is immeasurable,” said McGoldrick, who was assisted by co-prosecutor Laura Bradbury. “This was a brutal, senseless murder of an innocent man, a very, very good man.”
