Cindy Wolosick and Diana Thames shared Thanksgiving dinners, attended each other's family funerals and baked birthday cakes for each other.

A close 25-year friendship persisted through Thames' failed marriages, her bankruptcy filing and a short jail stint she did for heroin possession. Their bond remained strong, blossoming into a successful real estate rehabilitation business that sold houses Downstate in the Bloomington area.

But now Thames, 47, is in jail in lieu of $3 million bail, accused of fatally stabbing her best friend last month in Wolosick's Palatine town home after an argument over their business. Indicted last week in Cook County Circuit Court in Rolling Meadows, Thames is expected to be arraigned this month on first-degree murder charges.

Police have said Wolosick was stabbed in the chest and neck while she was lying on her bed. Earlier, police said, Wolosick had questioned Thames about money shortages from their business, for which Thames was the bookkeeper.

The pair and two other women returned from vacationing in Mexico late Aug. 11, and Thames stayed at Wolosick's condominium because she did not want to drive home in bad weather, police said. Officers were called to the home about 5 a.m. the next day, when Thames told police she found her friend dead.

A northwest suburban woman will spend 35 years in prison for knifing to death her longtime friend and business partner.

In pronouncing the sentence against Diana R. Thames, 50, of Palatine on Monday at the Rolling Meadows Courthouse, Circuit Judge John Scotillo said the Aug. 12, 2005, murder of Cindy Wolosick was especially irrational.

"Any murder is senseless, but this murder is harder to accept and get over. It appears to be inexplicable," Scotillo said.

I followed this case, and still can't figure out whether I believe she committed the murder or not.
