3 human skulls found in Palmdale apparently used in religious rite

Three human skulls were found at a Palmdale property, and authorities said Wednesday that they appeared to be used in religious ceremonies involving animal sacrifice and ancestor worship.

Chicken carcasses were also found at the scene, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Detective Kevin Acebedo said. “I don’t want to say (it is) Santeria but something that is similar to that.”

No one is in custody.

“It does appear the chickens were used in a religious rite,” Acebedo said. “They (the occupants of the property) did not say Santería. The individuals are involved in a religion that does involve animal sacrifice and ancestor worship. It (this kind of religion) goes by all different names. No two are the same, and everyone has different practices or procedures.”

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Department responded to a home in the 2500 block of East Avenue Q-4.

The remains, later identified as human skulls, were found at 2:45 p.m.

Huntington Beach Police were serving a search warrant in Palmdale for a robbery.

The robbery occurred some 90 miles away in Huntington Beach.

[Residents at the house told reporters police are lying about "skulls".]

"It's going to take identification by the coroner's office to try to determine just exactly who these people are and where these skulls came from," said Det. Kevin Acebedo with the L.A. County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau.

Acebedo also says the human skulls are adult-sized skulls and they appear to be part of the homeowner's religious practice.

Utah in 2011

They arrived at the house to search for drugs after arresting three men for possessing methamphetamines.

But police in Clearfield, Utah got a grisly shock when they opened Roberto Casillas-Corrales's backyard shed to find two human skulls and several hundred pounds of animal bones, flesh and blood on the floor and walls.

The remains emitted a strong stench and were surrounded by candles and symbols to form a shrine.

The 53-year-old said it was part of a ritual for his Santeria religion, of which he is a 'santero', or priest.

Casillas-Corrales was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of desecrating of a human body, and police say he may also face charges of cruelty to animals.
