"Name : Homicide of Rhona Margaret DUNCAN (Age 16)

Location : North Vancouver, British Columbia (BC)

Details : On the evening of July 16th 1976, 16 yr. old Rhona DUNCAN and some friends attended a house party on East Queens Ave. in North Vancouver, BC.

There were about 60 teenagers from school at the party. At about 1:00 A.M. Rhona and her girlfriend, Marion Bogues decided to walk home. They left with Bogues boyfriend, Owen Parry, and DUNCAN’s boyfriend, Shawn Mapoles. The boys went there separate ways as they got close to their homes and Bogues and DUNCAN continued on by themselves. DUNCAN and Bogues parted company near Bogues residence. Rhona DUNCAN was five blocks from her house. It was about 2:45 A.M. at this time."

Bumping for this young girl who should have been able to enjoy the rest of her summer, and so much more.

So many crimes can be hidden in the dark. It boggles the mind that the boyfriend "didn't" walk her home in the middle of the night.

So you have a 16 year-old walking the five blocks home at almost 3 am in the morning alone. Except she wasn't alone. After being at a party with 60 other teenagers, someone was lurking. The arguing the neighbour heard at 3 am had to be Rhona and her killer. My guess? It was someone who wanted to be with her, or who wanted to mean way more to her than he did. It was 3 am, drinking may or may not have been involved. He gets into a rage when she turns away his advances and he rapes and strangles her. Since nothing more was heard from the neighbour, the killer would have had to incapacitate her (which didn't kill her) or strangle her as he raped her? No mention if she had a head wound?

Almost 42 years and no DNA match. This killer lead a very quiet life and somehow stayed off the radar, or they haven't been able to track down a sample to check against the remaining suspects. No doubt someone knows he did it or may have even suspected he did it. Someone ALWAYS knows ....

The Mounties have this one for action. From RCMP file:

Rhona DUNCAN was five blocks from her house. It was about 2:45 A.M. at this time.

At about 3:00 A.M. a neighbor of DUNCAN’s heard the sound of a male and female arguing outside of her residence. She woke her husband and he went out to investigate. The husband went to the back of his residence and heard the male and female arguing. He yelled, “What’s going on here?” and the noises stopped. He did not hear anything else so he went back to bed. The neighbor lived three houses away from the DUNCAN residence.

DUNCAN’s partially clad body was located the next morning at about 09:00 a.m. in some long grass behind the neighbors garage. She had been raped and strangled. Cause of death was determined to be from manual strangulation.

Investigators interviewed all of DUNCAN’s friends and acquaintances. Numerous polygraph examinations were conducted but the case remained unsolved. In 1998 with the advances in DNA technology a DNA profile was obtained of Rhona DUNCAN’s attacker.

A list of 172 males consisting of all of DUNCAN’s acquaintances and all of the suspects on the file was compiled. Investigators have obtained DNA samples from the vast majority of the subjects on the list and compared them with the suspect DNA with negative results. All of the higher priority subjects on the list have been eliminated. Many of the remaining subjects are either deceased or have not been located.

I'm curious about DNA matches in these old files. Do you know how likely it is DNA has been collected from the scene, even if the investigators at the time didn't realize it? Ex. from her clothing. Or in other cases, from a suspect's belongings.

Or would the police not bother to take, say, a lingering comb or toothbrush in the age pre-DNA. (Not applicable to this case, but a general question I'm curious about...)

Assuming LE have DNA because they took samples from people associated with Rhona. imo.

11 Unsolved Canadian Murder Mysteries You Won't Believe Are True
"Rhona had attended a party the night of July 16th, 1976 when she had last been seen. After leaving her friends to walk home around 2:45 AM, her neighbours woke up to people arguing in the street. After the neighbour yelled back the voices stopped. Rhona's body was found the next morning in a different neighbour's garage.

After conducting DNA and polygraph tests as well as speaking with her friends, family and acquaintances, all of the high profile suspects had been eliminated and the murder remains unsolved."
