Associated Press
October 6, 2015

Police in Daytona Beach have arrested a 52-year-old convicted sex offender after a homeless pregnant woman was tied up and tortured in a recreational vehicle.

John Lytus remained in the Volusia County Jail on Tuesday after his arrest last week on charges that include sexual battery with a deadly weapon, kidnapping and failure to register as a sex offender.

The woman told investigators Lytus threatened to kill her if she didn't do what he told her.

She says she was hog-tired and attacked for about 12 hours.

Police said John Lytus, 52, pulled up to a 7-Eleven at 955 Ridgewood Avenue and asked the victim to get in his truck, which she did.

According to a police report, after Lytus asked her, the victim told him she was "dope sick" and homeless.

After the two drove around for about two hours and found some prescription medication delaudid, they arrived at an RV, which was parked near 554 Baldwin Lane.

[...]
Police said the victim went to the bathroom and when she walked out of the room Lytus, armed with a knife, forced her to the bedroom. He told her she had two options: Do what he told her to do or she could die and he would bury her.

The victim told police she pleaded with Lytus not to hurt her because she was six months pregnant.

Lytus reportedly raped her and then left her bound for 12 hours.

The following day, Lytus returned the woman to the same location he picked her up at, police said.

Rape suspect person of interest in death

Sheriff's spokesman Andrew Gant confirmed on Tuesday that investigators consider Lytus a person of interest in the suspicious death of 30-year-old Laura Nagengast. The mother of six — Nagengast had a baby four weeks before she was found dead, according to her mother-in-law — was found at 2400 Central Parkway near DeLand on Sept. 23.

While investigators have not released her cause of death because it was undetermined in an autopsy, Nagengast's mother-in-law Cheryl Nagengast in Michigan told The Daytona Beach News-Journal that Laura Nagengast had been beaten.

[...]
The mother-in-law also said that investigators told relatives that Laura Nagengast vanished Sept. 20 and was last seen climbing into a later-model blue Toyota Tundra pickup with a heavyset, middle-aged man. Lytus drives a 2008 blue Toyota Tundra pickup, he is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 200 pounds, police said. He is 52 years old.

A day before Laura Nagengast's body was found, police said a second woman came forward who had information about a "white man in a blue truck." The woman, described in the report as "a local prostitute," told police the man took her to a group of apartments and that there was a recreational vehicle parked on the street. They went inside and the woman told police the man forced her to put her hands behind her back at knifepoint and he secured them with duct tape. The man then forced the woman into oral sex, police said.
The article goes on to talk about the pregnant woman mentioned in the first post. She's the one who ID'd the creep in a line up.

I hope they'll compare m.o. of this fellow with the patterns of missing women in Daytona over the last several years. The threat verbiage he used makes me think he's more mature in his criminal pattern than just one conviction implies.

Sure would love to know about search warrants for his truck and the RV.

The Sept. 25 sheriff's report shows that when a check was done on Lytus' name information was returned from INTERPOL stating he is a wanted fugitive in Nicaragua for the "offense of rape threatening with a knife," the report states.

[...]
Orange County court records show that Lytus moved to San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, in 2013 or 2014. The city is a coastal area popular with tourists.

Lytus' ex-wife Nicola Lytus stated in a court document obtained by The News-Journal through a public records request that her ex-husband had moved to Nicaragua and was "running with pistols in the Third World countries with the Hells Angels." Nicola Lytus wrote that her husband is a member of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club and has been active with the group for years.

[...]
According to his ex-wife, Lytus has been coming to Daytona Beach for years because he enjoyed motorcycle-related activities and special events.

I'm down in Orange county now but lived in Volusia for 12 years, the better known Gang operators in Daytona were allegedly the The Outlaws, but sounds like there were a pretty solid mix over the years: http://articles.orlandosentinel.com..._1_florida-warlocks-david-maloney-biker-gangs so this may not narrow things much, and I'd suppose each has a branch of business related to prostitution. Seems like he targeted girls that didn't otherwise know him, so they may not have been part of Gang related business.

Purely loose assumptions on my part, Daytona sees a lot of transient visitors and migratory laborers for biker and NASCAR events, so he may have had plenty of down-on-their-luck girls to prey on. :(

In light of this recent news, I finally feel comfortable moving John Lytus' thread over to this forum from Crimes in the News.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Investigators are working to figure out if the man accused of raping and torturing a homeless woman could have more victims.

The case is similar to several serial murders in Daytona Beach, but detectives said they don’t have the DNA evidence to connect the dots.

Ten years since the killings began, investigators said they’re checking every lead, including John Lytus.

In a few months, Lytus could stand trial for allegedly raping a 35-year-old woman at knife point.

Sheriff's spokesman Andrew Gant said Wednesday that "some items" of evidence gathered in the death investigation of 30-year-old Laura Nagengast have been returned to sheriff's investigators by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

"We have results back for some of those items of evidence and what we've gotten back is favorable for our case," Gant said.

The person of interest in Nagengast's death is sex offender John Lytus, 52, of Daytona Beach. Lytus has been charged formally by the State Attorney's Office with the rape and kidnapping of a homeless, pregnant woman that Daytona Beach investigators say he raped and tortured over a 12-hour period Sept. 18 in a recreational vehicle.

Moccio, who owns the vehicles police seized, is requesting that both the RV and the Toyota truck be returned to him. However, a police report states that a blue blanket with blood on it, a roll of silver duct tape, several strands of hair found in both the RV and the truck, several black zip ties and an assortment of knives, were recovered from the vehicles.
