Police hunt suspects in Tennessee college shooting; one dead

[snipped]

Police said on Friday they had recovered a pistol and were looking for suspects after gunfire erupted on the campus of Tennessee State University in Nashville, killing one man.

The shooting, which occurred just before 11 p.m. local time on Thursday, stemmed from a dispute over a dice game during a student gathering in an outdoor courtyard that escalated into a physical fight, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said. The pistol was recovered in the immediate area.

Police say Selmon was killed in a shooting amid an argument over a dice game. The Memphis teenager was not a student at the Nashville university.

Police say three student passers-by were injured in the shooting, which happened at 10:50 p.m. Two were treated and released from the hospital. The third did not require hospitalization.

Police continue to search for the shooter, who escaped on foot.

My cousin's daughter (my 2nd cousin) was one of the young female students shot. As a long time member here, I hope you understand that I will not be sharing her name or the extent of her injuries (for her privacy). I will say that she was released from the Hospital this morning and she is doing as well as can be expected.

I am sorry that your 2nd cousin was wounded in this attack, LolaMoon, but I'm so glad she is out of the hospital now and recuperating. I hope she will fully recover, but am sure there will always be emotional scars. ((Hugs))

I looked for a FB page for Cameron. I found someone with the same name who is from Nashville but lives in Madison, WI. News articles state he is from Memphis. I know the FB page may not be his (it is set to private), so don't want to link it. It is still a more than 3 hour drive from Memphis to Nashville. He may have had HS friends or relatives still living in Nashville and attending TSU. Just wondering what connections he had there/who he was staying with. If he was involved in the dice game and the shooting was a result of a dispute surrounding the dice game, surely someone with him knows who the shooters are. JMO

Metro Police Release Frantic 911 Calls From Deadly TSU Shooting

[snipped]

"We are on the streets, right now, trying to confirm some of the material that's been reported to us in those Crime Stoppers tips," said Metro Police spokesman Don Aaron.

Police said surveillance video showed at least a dozen people recording the fight that led up to the shooting on their phones.

They made two arrests this past August.

Metro police said Chris Gatewood and Robert Tunstall have each been indicted on several charges, including one count of first-degree murder, three counts of attempted second-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault.

Gatewood, 20, was arrested at his mother’s home in Memphis last Friday. He has been in the Shelby County Jail as a Nashville fugitive since.

Tunstall, 20, was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon while visiting a parole officer in Memphis. He was convicted on robbery and felony theft charges in 2014 in Shelby County.

Selmon, 19, was fatally shot during a dice game on the TSU campus on Oct. 22, 2015. Investigators said Gatewood and Tunstall are the two men seen on surveillance video firing pistols at Selmon.

Stacie Payne, Selmon’s mother, said while she is relieved that two men have been arrested, she said she also feels sorry for the mothers of Gatewood and Tunstall.

“It’s kind of a funny feeling. I’m almost speechless. And I’m thankful. I’m so thankful that they are off the streets and no longer a menace to society,” Payne said. “Now the sad part is their moms have to go through what I’ve gone through. They’re going to lose a son. You never want a mother to feel that way.”

The two men accused of shooting and killing a 19-year-old man during a dice game on Tennessee State University’s campus last fall both pleaded not guilty.

News 2 has since learned that Gatewood was a student at the Nashville university at the time of the shooting, but he has not been enrolled since last fall.

Family of murder victim comes to Nashville, finds court hearing cancelled

http://wkrn.com/2016/11/10/murder-victims-mother-arrives-in-nashville-to-learn-hearing-continued/

The mother of a murder victim learned after arriving to Nashville a discussion hearing in the case was continued for two men charged with the fatal shooting of her son.

She arrived to court Thursday at 9 a.m., unaware the hearing had been continued.

“I checked online and the last time I talked to someone in the prosecutor’s office they told me it was still set for today,” she said. “I am frustrated but I will keep making the trip so I can get justice for my son.”

She continued, “Going through this process is very difficult, but I have to be here for my son.”

It is not clear why the district attorney’s office did not notify her of the hearing change prior to her driving from Memphis.

A new discussion hearing date for Gatewood and Tunstall has not been set.

Murder suspects in TSU dice game shooting are out of jail, case at a pause

http://www.wsmv.com/story/36524560/murder-suspect-in-tsu-dice-game-shooting-are-out-of-jail-case-at-a-pause

This week, News 4 learned Gatewood and Tunstall are out of jail. The state decided not to prosecute for now in April.

The district attorney's office told News 4 the decision came after the main witness in the case recanted her statements that she saw Gatewood and Tunstall doing the shooting. That witness was indicted on a felony for providing inaccurate information. She has a criminal court hearing in the next several weeks.

News 4 reached out to Selmon's mother to hear her reaction to the news. She said she has been upset since she learned about it five months ago.

"I really don't have words to describe how I've been dealing with it," said Selmon's mother, Stacie Payne. "It's devastating, and it's like heartbreak all over again."

Mother Of TSU Shooting Victim Still Looking For Answers

http://www.newschannel5.com/news/mother-of-tsu-shooting-victim-still-looking-for-answers

Stacie Payne, Cmeron's mother, was in town Thursday trying to get answers about who was behind her son's death.

She hoped a new billboard on Jefferson Street will bring in more tips.

Two people had been arrested for her son's death, but that all changed in April, when she said prosecutors told her they'd have to stop going after the case until more information came in.

How heartbreaking for Cameron's family. As if dealing with their loss isn't enough, his mother arrived for the court proceedings last year only to find out they were cancelled, and now after 2 men had been arrested for CS's murder they are released after a witness recants her testimony.

Why would someone accuse the 2 men of murder and then recant? Was she threatened by someone? Did she falsely accuse the men in retribution for something unrelated? I hope we will find out and that investigators will soon have the evidence they need to bring Cameron's killer(s) to justice.
