44 oil spills found in southeast Louisiana

Largest is nearly 4 million gallons, most big ones are on Mississippi River

More than 500 specialists are working to clean up 44 oil spills ranging from several hundred gallons to nearly 4 million gallons, the U.S. Coast Guard said in an assessment that goes far beyond initial reports of just two significant spills.

The report comes nearly three weeks after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, and reflects the fact that the Coast Guard and other agencies are able to only now tackle environmental problems since the search and rescue effort is winding down.

The Coast Guard estimates more than 7 million gallons of oil were spilled from industrial plants, storage depots and other facilities around southeast Louisiana.

This is why we shouldn't be eating seafood unless you catch it yourself in your own local lake. I am very worried about this as I am worried about everything but seriously, this is something folks need to be worried about.

Contamination will go on for years. Red Tide is only one problem. My thoughts are that irresponsible people will move on and sell fish from contaminated areas and they will be processed into the food chain. At this juncture more food poisonings will occur. And more deaths. Isolated throughout the country but the origin will be contaminated seafood.

The sickest I have ever been was food poisoning from either lobster or clams. No one else in the group experienced this. I caught the one contaminate. This was in Boston in the 80's. I was pretty sure I was going to die but I was young then and I don't think I could manage it now. So the kids and elderly and anyone with a compromised immune system could die. I hope someone reads this and heeds this.
