Detectives will be conducting a join investigation with the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the gender, identity and cause/manner of death.

No other information was released.

The last missing person's case in Ocklawaha was in February 2014 when 48-year-old John Radabaugh Jr., who has the mental capacity of a 3-year-old, wandered off from his home less than 10 miles away from Thursday's scene.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office called off the search for Radabaugh about a week after he was seen.

Officials search for evidence in area where human remains were found

The morning search session, which kicked off around 8 a.m., had members of the MCSO Field Force Team looking for any clues or evidence that might be linked to — and help in the identification of — the remains, which were found near the bank of an unnamed late Thursday afternoon. The officials carefully combed through an acre of thick brush and wooded areas along the way.

The afternoon session began around 12:45 p.m., with personnel retracing steps to see if they missed anything. They searched closed by the lake and discovered mostly fish and water moccasins. They decided against sending divers into the lake because it would have been too late in the day. They said they may use divers sometime next week.

Though authorities would not say if the bones were an intact skeleton, they did say they were carefully removed piece by piece and taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Leesburg.

There, officials are expected to examine the bones and work to extract DNA that could be compared to a database for possible identification. From there, the remains would go to a laboratory for further analysis.

Thomas Mascaro's Find FB page says that he walks the greenway all the way to Ocklawaha.

"Mr. Mascaro has been known to walk various trails in the Greenway. A relative told investigators, Mr. Mascaro will sometimes travel the trails all the way to Pruitt Trailhead and may walk sections of the trail all the way to Ocklawaha."

I hope they are able to put the pieces of the puzzle together and bring some family peace of mind.

This UID is not Johnny Radabaugh; DNA did not match:

Forensic anthropologists with the University of South Florida’s Art of Forensics’ program believe the remains are those of a 30-50 year old white male.

They believe he had very poor dental health, periodontal disease and numerous amalgam and composite dental restorations. Chemical isotope testing... found that the unidentified individual probably grew up in Western Europe, the Middle East, or Australia, and was only in Florida for a short period of time prior to his death.

I tried to find Round Lake on the map but couldn't find any reference - perhaps it's very small or it's local vernacular for a lake with a different name. I wonder what brought him here - if someone really wanted to hide a body wouldn't they just keep driving a short distance to the Ocala National Forest?
