Concerns for woman missing for two months
"CONCERNS have escalated over the disappearance of Lismore woman Ellen Wilson who vanished without a trace two months ago.

The 54-year-old was last seen at the Australian Hotel in Ballina on Friday September 11.

Richmond LAC investigations manager Detective Sergeant Bernadette Ingram said Ellen's disappearance as an "absolute mystery."

Ellen Wilson, 2015

Ellen Wilson, 54, has been missing since 11 September, 2015.

A CCTV image that morning showed her taking cash out from an ATM in Ballina, the airport town near Byron Bay where thousands of tourists land for their holidays.

She was last seen at the Australian Hotel before she left in her silver Subaru station wagon with NSW registration plates CB-76-QX.

The next morning she phoned a friend and agreed to meet her in Ballina for some volunteer work later that day.

But Ms Wilson did not turn up and her friend became worried about her and called police to report her missing.

She has not been heard from or seen since.

Police have been to her house in Goonellabah several times but found no sign of her.

They have also been unable to find her car, despite several unconfirmed reports from people saying they had seen it in 2015.

Ms Wilson's relatives said it was extremely unusual for her not to make contact and that she missed several scheduled appointments.

She is described as 165cm tall with a medium build and shoulder length greyish-brown hair. She has blue eyes and wears reading glasses.

Richmond LAC investigations manager Detective Sergeant Bernadette Ingram said in 2015 that police have no idea what happened to her.

'We've spoken to quite a lot of witnesses and it's an absolute mystery.

'There's no indication as to what might have happened to her after she left the hotel'.

I was thinking that it is interesting the surname "Wilson" which was also the maiden name of missing Marion Barter. Maybe just a coincidence but if a psychopath is the cause of various disappearances near Byron bay like the strange coincidence with 'Theo" and "Thea"

The ATM visited by Ellen on Friday 11 September 2015 was probably not in Woodlark Street Lismore (as reported by media, presumably informed by police), but was instead in Molesworth Street Lismore, in my opinion. The ATMs in Woodlark Street don't appear to have columns or a fence panel nearby as shown in the CCTV images released by NSW Police. (If anyone knows of any that do fit the CCTV, though, please do say. This is all my opinion only.)

Below is a screenshot of the ATM at the Greater Building Society ("Greater Bank" since 2016) in Molesworth Street Lismore at the entrance to the Strand Arcade, as shown in Google Maps Street View in December 2015. I've marked up the image to show the parts which match the ATM's CCTV of Ellen as captured on 11 September 2015:

blue line = ATM
yellow = columns
green = fence panel
orange = paved floor into arcade

Greater-ATM.png Greater-CCTV.png

IMO, if the street name was wrong it could have hurt the appeals for information. Anyone who had been in Molesworth Street that day might not have been alerted to stop and think about whether they had seen Ellen.

Ellen's sister: "We just miss her, so much. And there's not a day goes by I don't think about her. She was always good to us, with family, and friends, and she always was a good worker with disabled children, and adults as well. And, when our mum passed away, she wanted to start afresh, move north, and start a new life, I felt. We thought she was happy up there; we still sort of sent Christmas cards to each other, and she was fine. But, obviously she wasn't happy. She's just... disappeared; I'm not sure where she's gone."

(3:12)
Detective Chief Inspector Lindsay, Richmond Local Area Command [includes Lismore and Ballina]: "It's definitely a case that we need the help of the public. We've got to the end of our enquiries and we still haven't found [Ellen]. Probably the most important thing: if anyone has seen that motor vehicle. It's very unusual for a motor vehicle to stay missing for this amount of time." (BBM; transcribed by me and edited only to remove "um"s etc.)

That media conference was more than five years ago. If the motor vehicle is still missing (is it?), then that's probably very very unusual?

As far as I know local police have not discovered her car anywhere.
Although being rural, it could be parked on a property somewhere, in a garage, buried by earth moving machinery..
This area has a long record of little effort being put into missing cases.

I find it easier to believe your suggestions - that the car might have been hidden deliberately on private property - than that it just somehow evaded all detection and drove somewhere else, or that it crashed and ended up in a spot which has remained out of sight all these years, or whatever other possibilities might qualify as being "not suspicious circumstances".

Check out the following reports I could find for the last decade or so. Id say there were certainly some suspicious things happening then and continuing up to now..
Im sure there are more cases Ive missed.

8/9/2010 Julian Golding attended the Mt Warning Holiday Park for a three day stay on 6 September 2010. On 8 September 2010, Julian was last seen walking west along Tyungum Road towards Uki and stated he was visiting friends. Julian has not been seen or made contact with family or friends since leaving the caravan park. Mr Golding owns a 70ha property on nearby Mt Warning Road at Mt Warning, and police believe he might have got lost either on his property or in nearby bushland. He was reported missing to police on September 15.

Lying on her side, the woman was positioned in between two dunes in long grass. ‘It was an accident and she died peacefully, contrary to speculation,’ a family member told Echonetdaily. Ms Juhasz grew up in Coffs Harbour and had lived in the Byron Bay area for the last decade of her life.

27/11/2015 A MAN has died in sand dunes at Byron Bay. Tweed Byron police Inspector Mick Dempsey said the body of the 40-year-old man was found on sand dunes about 12.20pm today. Insp Dempsey said the man's death was not suspicious and it had nothing to do with schoolies celebrations currently going on at Byron Bay. He said the cause of death was a suspected drug overdose which would be confirmed when a post mortem was conducted. Insp Dempsey said the results of the post mortem could take up to six weeks.

13/7/2016 BYRON Bay police are preparing a brief for the coroner after a body was discovered about 2pm today in bushland near Tallow Beach. Inspector Greg Jago said police did not believe there were suspicious circumstances to the death but because of the length of time the body had laid undiscovered, no formal identification had been possible. ‘It was a male in his 40s and we believe we know who it is but we need to formally identity him using other means,’ Inspector Jago said. ‘We estimate the person had been dead for about two weeks.

25/9/2017 Police are still trying to establish how a man who was found face down in the water between The Pass and Wategos Beach, Byron Bay, yesterday came to be in the surf fully dressed. Garry Meredith from Surf Life Saving said lifesavers retrieved the body with the use of a jetski this morning. He is believed to be a Byron Bay local but his name has yet to be released.

3/11/2017 The court heard the last confirmed sighting of Ms Metcalfe was at the Lismore Bus Station on November 3, 2017. The following day her belongings, including a wallet with bank cards and a Medicare card, were found scattered on the railway platform at Mullumbimby. That prompted her parents to report their concerns to police at Byron Bay. Counsel assisting the coroner Kirsten Edwards told the court the mother of two "was in a state of psychosis when she went missing" and "She had been diagnosed as schizophrenic, and had no access to her medication.". Police received a call on 29/11 reporting the sighting of the body between Mullumbimby and Brunswick Heads.Due to the condition of the corpse the are currently using dental records to identify the individual. A pathologist found no physical injuries or signs of trauma, but could not rule out foul play due to the advanced level of decomposition. There were no signs of drowning, and no trace of drugs in Ms Metcalfe's blood. The court was told no active steps were taken to locate Ms Metcalfe between November 5, when her parents thought they had reported her missing, and November 8 when a missing persons report was actually taken. Ms Edwards told the court there was also no consultation with homicide, the missing persons unit or the media unit about seeking further assistance to investigate Ms Metcalfe's disappearance.

It's a long list, HinterlandObserver. I wasn't aware of most of those cases. If Ellen had any links to the Tweed/Byron area it's at least possible her disappearance might be related to others? I haven't seen anything to suggest that she had an itinerant sort of life, except that police said she was "known to frequent the Sydney and Far North Coast areas" (link below), whatever that means.

They are just some examples of the strange things that happen.
I forgot to add in known local perps who have been charged for some bad deeds but whether any others being linked to them has been explored I wouldn’t know.

There was also a murder/suicide at the end of 2020 after a woman was reported missing (from Lennox head) by Peter Tobin which never made the news at all.

I don’t know about direct links per se but I certainly believe in my own opinion there’s a link with peoples socioeconomic status at minimum. A lot of these perps are low income/low level education etc.

A lot of the victims are single women, homeless people, have been suggested struggling with mental health issues, drug use etc.

Then if you start looking at specific areas that’s a whole other bizarre story.
Look up Tumbulgum and all of the crazy stuff that continues to happen there and around that area.

We definitely have an opportunist or two preying on people in this area. Some police transparency and accountability for what has been done and who has been looked into would be great.

I genuinely wonder if Ellen was helping someone in a bad place, possibly lending them money (bank withdrawal) and may have been in the wrong place at the wrong time when they had a mental health break.
My own opinion.

Just to focus on Ellen, I think there might be any number of possible scenarios and explanations for her disappearance, but what matters is whether they're relevant: do they make sense and could they have happened within the context of her life? And we've been told almost nothing about Ellen's life, so IMO it's not possible to know what could be relevant or not. Police didn't even say what she was wearing when last seen, or what time she left the hotel, or whether she left on her own or in company.

Was she struggling in a way which might have attracted one of the preying opportunists you're talking about? (e.g. struggling with mental illness; or drug use; or homelessness; or financial problems; etc.) Based on the few articles I've read about her, I don't think it's possible to know.

There are a few records online saying that Ellen's mum passed away in November 2012 in the Northern Beaches region of Sydney and has a gravesite in the ACT, but I haven't seen anything which explains where Ellen was living.

Re a nickname: a photo caption in a 2016 article says: "Missing woman, Ellen 'Ellie' Wilson". But the main body of the same article doesn't mention "Ellie" at all, even though it talks to Ellen's sister (who might have used a pet name for Ellen if there is one).

- Missing woman's car is 'critical element': Police, Daily Telegraph / Northern Star, 28 Dec 2016 (paywalled, sorry)

I only ask about name variations as I’ve found a sole trader ABN that’s no longer active that originated as “Elena Wilson” then changed to “Ellen Wilson” in postcode 2304.
Historical details for ABN 26 710 318 172 | ABN Lookup

Being away from family between 2012-2015, possibly experiencing grief, trying to start a new life, being a professional carer is incredibly demanding..
I do feel like that could leave you very open to making friends that could take advantage. Or have you mixing with company that have other friends that are questionable.

The amount she withdrew could also be an indicator to what was intended to be purchased.

The reputation for the “Aussie hotel” in Ballina is not good now let alone seven years ago. I believe it was shut down for a while after a homeless 83-year-old man allegedly started a fire at the rear of the pub which caused extensive damage to the bistro, kitchen and back bar.. just after Ellen went missing.

The hotel is not a tourist spot despite recently being renovated. The reputation ensures if you’re not a regular, you wouldn’t go there. Around that time the hotel accommodated a lot of people who couldn’t access accomodation elsewhere when released from prison or Richmond clinic because it was cheap and nasty, and in town close to services.
(The other pubs in town are not much better, googling any of them will produce news reports of violence and deaths, indicating kind of people in town in general).

You said that Ellen was a professional carer - do you know this, or was it a guess? I was wondering if her work had been all voluntary:
- In 2015, Detective Sergeant Bernadette Ingram said Ellen "is relocated from a different part of Australia, the details of which I don't have with me, but she's been in this area for a little while now, so she has established friendships here and she's been involved in some volunteer work." (BBM)
(transcribed from about 03:26 in the video in Concerns for woman missing for two months, Daily Telegraph / Northern Star, 09 Nov 2015 - not paywalled)
- In 2016 Ellen's sister said Ellen "always was a good worker with disabled children, and adults as well".
(about 01:47 in Police address the media for the launch of NSW Missing Persons Week 2016, Facebook Watch, 31 July 2016)

Also, same question: is it knowledge or a guess that the hotel was providing crisis accommodation at the time Ellen went missing? If it was, that might be interesting, particularly if she was staying there or went there to visit a resident. But it would also be possible that she went there for reasons unrelated to accommodation e.g. for a meal or a drink; to hear a band; to play the pokies; etc.

IMO one interesting thing is that the bank Ellen visited for the ATM in Lismore also has a branch and ATM in Ballina, in the same street as the hotel and less than 100 metres away. This makes me wonder whether Ellen withdrew cash in Lismore because she needed to use it during the day, before going to Ballina. (That's if she did actually withdraw money. The CCTV doesn't show cash as far as I can see. Maybe she was checking her balance?)
