Two Australian Surfers Vanish in Mexico
"After a pair of surfers failed to arrive in Guadalajara, Mexico, friends and family are concerned for their safety. Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman, two friends from Western Australia, were traveling by van in search of waves when they disappeared.

Lucas and Coleman are from Golden Bay, a suburb of Perth. According to reports, they had “solid plans and reservations” to be in Guadalajara by November 21st. They’ve been classified as missing people by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

It has also been reported that Coleman’s phone is being used by someone else, but details surrounding the missing pair are sketchy."

It's in Spanish. My translation (apologies if it's rough, I don't often translate crime stories!):

A van was found with two people inside which had been set on fire. The finding occurred on a dirt road ("the 25") which connects the towns El Tigre (also known as Juan Aldama) and San Blas, Navolato.

Locals were traveling the path when they noticed a Chevy van among the nearby fields. Upon approaching they discovered two burned people inside.

It is assumed that these persons were traders (note: awkward translation) because inside the van large amounts of burnt cans were found, and a bicycle was in place of the spare tire.

Police and state security officers arrived at the scene.

There is a photo accompanying the story that looks, unfortunately, very much like the van our missing Australians were driving.

ETA: Found another news story that gives more detail than the one I linked and translated above: http://www.noroeste.com.mx/publicaciones.php?id=1068817

It's mostly the same as the above, though it mentions that the vehicle was missing its license plates and that the initial call about the vehicle was reported at 10:30 on the day before the article was published (putting the call at 10:30am November 21st).

Ugh! I hope they just got mugged and are found safe. So tragic 😣

Unfortunately the burnt van looks exactly like the one the two surfers were driving; the bicycle is there too. I get so angry and feel so helpless when this type of completely unwarranted violence occurs. Its just so senseless and random. It takes away from the sense of freedom and safety that we all have the right to enjoy. I don't know how anyone who is affected by something like this ever recovers any sense of normalcy in their lives.

BBM - As positive as I am that this burned van was indeed that of Dean and Adam, I have a tiny shred of hope in that the van our Aussies were driving had a very distinct BACK RIGHT DOOR (the one that did not contain the spare tire) that was red. In the pictures of the burnt van, the only door that looks unusual is the BACK LEFT DOOR. Perhaps there were two unrelated young men who happened to be driving a nearly-identical Chevy van with a bicycle on the back on a road just off the route from Topolobampo to Guadalajara..?:please:

Something else I noticed...the driver's side, above the rear tire, on the burnt van looks like the access door to gas tank. I don't see the same on the picture of the van driven by the two surfers. Maybe I am seeing things???? Hoping for the best here.

..Hate to burst your bubble, but here's another picture from the article about their disappearance I posted earlier.. http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/11/29/05/2EE4911E00000578-3337399-image-a-5_1448773311732.jpg

This is so upsetting. I live in a surfing destination, and know people who travel the world to find great surf spots. They are, to a one, gentle people who are just looking to have a great adventure.

It is them, I have no doubt and I will bet they were stopped by armed men on the road, robbed and killed. They were traveling through one of the most dangerous places in lawless Mexico. May as well be in Afghanistan.

I do want to mention to everyone that Mexico in and of itself isn't a dangerous place, much like the United States isn't in and of itself a dangerous place. But every country has its places that are remote, dark, seedy, etc., and Mexico is no exception. In the US we have Detroit, we have parts of Chicago and New York, we have bad areas of Philadelphia - in Mexico there are good areas and bad areas. You can't expect the police to constantly monitor hundreds of miles of dirt roads between towns too small to be called cities.

I'm thinking the different look of the left back door is because of the tyre burning - would have been very dirty smoke?

This is just horrible. :( I also have to doubt it is them.

This is so sad. They do look like gentle, fun loving surfer dudes. Sounds like they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Unfortunately the flashy new van with Canadian license plates would make them really stand out in that part of the country. They would have been much better to rent a local beat up old van so they would have blended in.

My thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends.

Being in the wrong place at the wrong time! - I hope the burnt van is not theirs and they are still alive

This pretty much confirms the burned van is indeed, their van. So effed up.

From that link: "The families and partners are aware the van in which they were travelling has been located by Mexican authorities and that a tragic event has occurred, the families said in a statement released by DFAT."

And, a Dailymail link with more pics, and confirmation of said van. Those poor guys.

What a terrible thing to have to do. My thoughts are with her and their families.

"Everything points to it being them because the van matches, it had a bicycle," said Gomez. "But nothing is confirmed yet. Josie is arriving from Canada today and early Monday we are going to leave for Culiacan to see the bodies and do DNA tests."
She said that Cox was bringing Lucas' dental records for matching and she had "pieces of dreadlocks" that Coleman had given her."

Large number of cans were found inside the van, so many that the locals thought they were traders. I wonder if we will hear more about the cans. It's an odd detail, isn't it?
