"Eleven years ago to the day, Maggie Burke left her Edmonton apartment at 118th Avenue and 95th Street to meet a friend.
"It's been a nightmare," said her mother Marie Burke. "A nightmare that we haven't really been able to wake up from."

Burke spoke to reporters Wednesday at an Edmonton police news conference, near where her 21-year-old daughter disappeared so many years ago, in an effort to generate new tips in the case."

"Even though it's been 11 years, we think somebody out there might know something, as small as a tip it might be," said Sgt. Neil Zurawell, of the police service's missing person's unit. "They might think it's insignificant, but it could make the difference."

Zurawell said police have little to go on in the case, one of 83 historical files dating back to the 1970s that are being investigated.

Police have their suspicions, but don't have enough information to know exactly what happened, he said".

"Maggie Burke was 21-years-old when she vanished from central Edmonton. It’s believed she was going to meet a friend. Burke was involved in the sex-trade industry and a “high-risk lifestyle,” the RCMP’s Project KARE team said in a missing person alert released in April 2005. Investigators believe foul play was involved in her disappearance.

Marie Burke says she knows her daughter struggled with drug addictions, “but it’s not who she was.”

“She is a very loving person. She loved to work with animals, she wanted to be a veterinarian. She worked in restaurants as a server. She had a full life. She also has an 11-year-old daughter who wonders what’s happened to her mother.”

Maggie Burke was a 21-year-old prostitute and crack addict who was reported missing by her roommate David Stang in December 2004. She was aboriginal, stood five foot seven, weighed 120 lbs, had brown eyes and brown hair with red highlights.

Stang was living with Burke and other friends on 95 Street around 118 Avenue at the time – but didn’t know a lot about Burke’s activities as a prostitute. He said she would receive phone calls at home, go out and then return a few hours later. And police say they believe she worked in the area of the 7-Eleven store near 89 Street.

Stang said Burke disappeared after receiving a call the night of Dec. 9 sometime before midnight – leaving the residence and saying she’d be right back. She took nothing with her.

respectfully snipped for conciseness

Her daughter is 11, she went missing 11 years ago. She disappeared immediately after giving birth. I feel like that's waving some flags.

However, this statement:

Last April, the RCMP found the remains of Delores Brower, 33, and Renee Ottenbreit, 27, on a rural property near Leduc. The two women went missing from the 118th Avenue area four days apart in May 2004. Both were sex trade workers.

is waving SO MANY MORE FLAGS. All of them are red. Or at least very intense fuchsia.

Sometimes I think just being indigenous is considered a high risk lifestyle for LE and many others.. it's so sad..

While Maggie is another indigenous missing woman, she is classified as high-risk lifestyle due to being a STW and having a history of drug addiction.

Did Maggie and some of the other missing young women caught up in this cycle, unable to leave?

EARLY LIFE:
Maggie Lea Burke was born on November 9, 1983 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. According to her mother, Marie, she was a happy-go-lucky and outgoing person whose friendly nature allowed her to easily make friends. She also had a love for animals, with an aspiration of one day becoming a veterinarian.

Maggie lived in an apartment in the area of 118th Avenue, at the intersection with 9th Street, just north of Edmonton’s downtown core. The area is known for drugs, sex work and violence. Maggie struggled with drug addiction and participated in the sex trade in order to make ends meet. She was known to work the area of 89th Street, near the local 7-Eleven.

At the time of her disappearance, she worked as a server at restaurants and was the mother to a young daughter named Pipon.

LEAD UP TO DISAPPEARANCE:
Just before midnight on December 9, 2004, Maggie received a phone call from an unknown person. After finishing the call, she told her roommates she’d be right back, as she had to meet a friend. She took nothing with her.

DISAPPEARANCE:
Maggie was reported missing by her roommate, David Stang on December 18, 2004, after she still hadn’t returned home. However, the Edmonton Police Service did not release information about her disappearance until five months later.

SEARCH:
The KARE Unit is currently handling the case. It’s a Royal Canadian Mounted Police entity that investigates cases of missing and murdered vulnerable individuals throughout Alberta. In April 2005, they released a public alert that detailed Maggie’s involvement in the sex trade industry, saying she lived a “high-risk lifestyle”.

According to David, he was not fully knowledgeable about Maggie’s work in the sex trade, only saying he would drive her to and from her meetings with clients.

In October 2015, the RCMP featured Maggie’s case in a 10-day social media campaign meant to highlight cases of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women across Canada.

In November 2015, Crime Stoppers set up a billboard at the intersection of 117th Avenue and 95th Street in Edmonton, in the hopes of jogging someone’s memory and reigniting interest in the case. That same month, they also released a series of video re-enactments.

Maggie’s family issued its first public pleas for assistance in 2015. They don’t believe she willingly left her of her own volition, given how close she was to her loved ones.

While foul play is suspected in the case, investigators have very little to go on. They say they have their suspicions, but don’t have enough evidence or information to know exactly what happened on the night Maggie’s disappearance.

CASE CONTACT INFORMATION:
