John Fernandez was last seen at 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, December 13 at his home on Kentucky Avenue in Middletown. He may be in the Natco Lake/Hazlet area or along Henry Hudson Trail.

Middletown and Hazlet police combed the area around Natco Lake Sunday looking for him. Divers were called in from the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office Underwater Search team to search the waters of Natco Lake. Police K9 dogs were used; Hazlet’s ATV units and the sheriff’s department helicopter combed the wooded area, but no sign of Fernandez was found.

Fernandez is described as a Filipino male, 5’10 with a thin build, and black hair. He may be wearing a dark grey leather jacket with a gray fabric hood and black high top “Heely” sneakers with wheels similar to a roller skate. According to his Facebook page, he studies accounting a Seton Hall University.

Not a lot I could find on this young man's search or much that his family has put out there. I believe this is his FB page. https://www.facebook.com/john.fernandez.7927?fref=pb&hc_location=profile_browser

It's so sad that it seems that younger males don't get a lot of media attention sometimes. I have an 18 year old son and hate to think that because of that his case might not get looked at as much IMO.

They are talking about Allaire state park in there. That place is huge. Its also right by my house. I'll keep an eye out for him.

A Seton Hall student missing since his disappearance on Dec. 13, 2015, reportedly wrote a six page suicide letter where he stated that he “feels inadequate with amazing people”...

On the day that Fernandez went missing, his cell phone was found neatly placed in a plastic Ziploc bag on the side of Route 36 in Hazlet...

Fernandez’s mother told the FilAm that her son “left everything behind” and would “end his life in a high place somewhere in the woods.”

A volunteer group of searchers will return to Allaire State Park this Saturday, Feb. 6 to again look for John “JP/Japes” Fernandez, the 22-year-old Middletown man who has been missing since Dec. 13...

Schaefer has been working closely with the Fernandez family since the young man disappeared, the family confirmed. She said his family has been helping the search, trudging through frozen woods and snow to find him.

Fernandez’s mother told the FilAm that when her son was attending Middletown High School North in Middletown, N.J., he would come home from school with his shirt torn and spat on.

Nancy Schaefer, founder of Missing in America, who is helping the family look for Fernandez, stated in a Patch.com article that he also had issues with bullying in middle school and even at Seton Hall, where he was set to graduate from the Stillman School of Business in May 2016.

Ninia Fernandez said her son was having “an identity crisis” and that he felt isolated and alone.

Maybe I am missing the correct timeline, but does this imply his parents have known or had possession of a suicide letter from 2 months ago and are only telling the police now? I am confused.

Also, he had one semester of college left and is letting some college-age morons affect him that badly? I wonder if there was some underlying mental problems cropping up? In May, he could have moved to Texas or some other warm, sunny place with no state income tax and life would have only gotten better.

Could be LE who withheld that info from the public.

I think very early on there was mention of a suicide note by one of his friends on Tumblr but it wasn't made public public and we'll we can't discuss or bring SM here so we couldn't mention it then. 😟

Fernandez, who went to Middletown High School North and was a senior at Seton Hall University, left a suicide note the day he went missing. “He said he would end his life in a high place somewhere in the woods,” his mother Ninia, told a Filipino-American newspaper. The young man had a summer internship once at Allaire State Park, leading Schaefer to “strongly suspect” that’s where he might be.

A volunteer group of searchers returned to Allaire State Park on Saturday, Feb. 6.

After Patch published comments from Fernandez’s mother saying her son had been bullied in Middletown public schools, and had issues in college, Schaefer said she’s been inundated with calls from strangers, mostly mothers who said their child had been bullied, too — not just in Middletown but at schools across New Jersey.

6 page suicide letter, cell phone in plastic baggie. This sounds well thought out I'm sad to say. The comment about "identity" crisis made me think maybe having a hard time coming to grips with his sexuality? I hope he is found soon for his families sake.
