Eder escaped from California State prison in 1974. Eder was serving a sentence for murdering and disemboweling 4 children and shooting their mother.
Murders were committed when Eder was 16. Eder is originally from New York. EDERs mother lived in Florida at the time of his arrest. Eder possibly has ties to the Berkley, San Francisco, CA area as well as New York, Washington and Florida.
Prior to his arrest in 1958 he made trips to Tijuana, Mexico to obtain false identification.

Eder may had ties to left wing political groups such as Venceremos, S.D.I., Zapbom, the Symbionese Liberation Army and others who possibly assisted in the escape and helped him flee to Central or South America.

This guy's so creepy, I'm getting nightmares already.

Some details:
-his family was very glad to be rid of him
-he was already using pseudonyms as a teenager; I think he just borrowed these from other people, 'cos there are other people with these names
-he has an explosive temper
-his hair when he is being arrested as a young adult seems to be about the right texture as our UID
-there seems to be a mugshot that's not when he was a young adult and his hair must (?) be dyed near black in this photo?
-he pretty much disemboweled 4 children after shooting their mother
-he is good with knives
-he's tall (a few inches over 6 ft) and slender; said to be lanky
-he was born in approx 1942. This would have put him at approx 50 at the time of death. Would he have some grey hair at that time?
-Eder was featured on America's Most Wanted: America Fights Back (John Walsh) on February 8, 1991.

Some thoughts about what I have so far:

-this guy seems to have been nonchalant at the time of his gruesome murders in 1958
-for that reason, I doubt he's just hiding out in Mexico or somewhere; he's too brazen
-since his family was glad to be rid of him, I would conclude he was an evil child
-since he has an explosive temper, I can't imagine he hasn't killed again since his break from jail.
-has he been matched potentially with other murders?
-Shot in the dark: I looked at the Keddie murders (still unsolved?)
-he has to have been getting help hiding all these years or else he's dead
-I would guess only a bunch of ****s could keep a guy like this in check
-if he's the UID, his past may have caught up to him or he may have been responsible for a recent event

I haven't watched the America's Most Wanted program on Carl Eder, since I'm not a member of IMDb and don't care to spend money on it.... I note that the Eder profile is not the whole program, just maybe 1/3 or 1/4.

And I'm still fixated that there was a motorbike at the scene and that motorbiking is in the backstory.

I forgot to state that this reference is from my imagination. It's not based on any facts that I know of.

The California Department of Corrections is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a convicted murderer who escaped from prison in 1974 and was last seen two years later in the Upvalley area.

Carl Alfred Eder was convicted of murdering a mother and her four young children.

Eder had ties to motorcycle gangs and radical left-wing groups. It’s possible that he was murdered by members of one of those groups who were nervous about his violent rhetoric, said Agent Scott Webb of the California Department of Corrections’ Special Service Unit.

One informant said Eder had threatened the life of then-President Gerald Ford, Webb said last week.

“If he was spouting off all this crazy talk, it’s likely that they just put a bullet in his head and dropped him in a ditch, and that’s where he’s been since,” Webb said. That’s the most plausible explanation for Eder disappearing without a trace for so many years, he said.

Eder would be 70 years old today. He’s described as 6 feet 2 inches tall, 175 pounds, with blond or gray hair, blue eyes, scars on his left hand and abdomen, and a mole under his left eye.

Eder has been featured on “America’s Most Wanted” several times over the years. Webb said the hunt for Eder is periodically renewed when the Department of Corrections looks back over its cold cases.

“With so much happening in DNA technology, we go through these cold cases every two years,” Webb said.

Eder escaped in October 1974 from the California Correctional Institute in Tehachapi, where he’d been serving two life sentences for murders he’d committed when he was only 16 years old. He left a note reading, “I’ve done enough time and I’m leaving.”

In 1958, Eder had been homeless and hitchhiking when he was picked up by Thomas Pendergast of El Cajon, who took pity on him and let him stay with his family until he could find a job and a home. Eder murdered Pendergast’s wife and four children six weeks later.


Eder later told detectives he’d exploded in a rage because one of the children, 4-year-old Diane, was annoying him. He shot the mother, Lois Pendergast, in the head. Then he stabbed each of the four children to death: Diane; David, 9; Thomas Jr., 6; and Allen, 2.

He was last seen in 1976 in the Calistoga and St. Helena areas, where he’d been linked to anti-government groups like the Venceremos Brigade and the Symbionese Liberation Army.

Eder was also known to have ties to the Berkeley and San Francisco areas, New York, Kansas, and possibly Latin America or Canada.

Eder is a skilled cabinet maker and wood carver. He also had experience as a lab technician.

I note that there's no DNA on file for Eder. This would correspond with icsodetectives mention that there were no DNA hits for the UID.

Interestingly, if Eder was associated with the SLA.....the founder of the SLA (DeFreeze) had escaped from prison the year before Eder. Wikipedia on Symbionese Liberation Army.

I'm not sure how they'd go about making a match between a man whose only identifier is fingerprints and an unidentified person who deliberately destroyed his fingerprints.

I'm thinking a fingerprint match might be a minor shortcoming, since LE must have vast files on this guy.
