I'm new to Websleuths and know nothing about submitting possible matches. I got interested in the case of Brian Wehrle because I lived in N. Georgia for several years and am familiar with the area where he disappeared.

I was looking at photos on another site, and this one jumped out at me. There are some reasons it shouldn't be Brian W., but to me it seems a close resemblance--the overall face shape, the nose, the brow line, even the ear placement and hairline. Does anyone else think so?

Age range is OK and time frame generally matches, even though John Doe is believed to have died two or three years after B.W. went missing. J.D.'s ethnicity is listed as Hispanic which would seem to rule him out, but many names in the long list of exclusions don't seem to be Hispanic.

Any thoughts/suggestions on submission of this as a possible match?

Circumstance Notes
This skull, and no other remains, was located on the bank of the Jackson Creek 220 feet downstream from Rowell Ave, between Manhattan and Brown roads. Forensic examination by the University of Indianapolis indicates the person is a male white, 30- 60 years of age, Estimated time between death and discovery is 1 to 2 years. A second study by Forensic Anthropologist from the University of Illinois indicates that the fractures surrounding the left and right maxillae are more extensive than a simple broken nose and would be noticeable in life. They were not healed indicating the injury either occurred shortly before death are would not heal due to chronic anemia caused by 'porotic hyperstosis/cribra orbitalia. a condition more common in historic and prehistoric populations' per Dr. Cris Hughes UIUC.

I note the PMI is estimated at 2 years but at least one of the MP compared/ruled out (MP17958 Gary Swanson) would have had a PMI of 10 years if he matched. So I guess LE are taking the PMI with a grain of salt.

I suspect there's uncertainty surrounding PMI/EYOD. That might explain why they're not sticking to strict parameters.

This case seems as if it's going to be a hard solve. There's so little to go onvand so many potential matches. We'll likely need @othram, DNA Doe, or some other DNA ancestry organization to solve this case. (please tag these orgs if you know their WS names, ty!)

Also, I'll request a title change from Whtmale to Wht/HispMale.

A spokesperson from the sheriff’s office said the skull was found in an area where people “tend to dump garbage” and it is possible that the skull could have been used by a medical school.

PATRICK K. O'NEIL, Coroner of Will County, Illinois

PATRICK K. O'NEIL, Coroner of Will County, Illinois

Land surveyors discovered the human skull at the Manhattan Creek approximately 200 feet west of Rowell Avenue between Manhattan Road and Brown Road, Jackson Township, Will County. The Will County Coroner and the Will County Sheriff recovered the unidentified skull at the above location and submitted it to a forensic anthropologist for analysis.

The following is a summary of the findings:
The decedent is most likely a male, white, 30 years of age or older. Although no teeth were recovered, an abscess on the right maxilla suggests the possibility of an oral infection. Additionally, a healing fracture of the nasal bone is suggestive of a broken nose. The interval between the time of death and the time of discovery could not be definitively determined other than the individual died at least one year prior to discovery. Due to the limited amount of recovered skeletal remains, no other characteristics could be determined. The cause and manner of death will remain undetermined at this time.
A portion of the skull was sent to the University of North Texas for DNA analysis. If DNA is successfully extracted, the profile will be entered into CODIS and NamUS (National Missing and Unidentified Persons System). Both systems were created to assist in solving cases that involve unidentified human remains (www.NamUs.gov)

Anyone with information is asked to call the Will County Coroner’s Office at 815-727-8455 or the Will County Sheriff’s Police Investigations at 815-727-8574.

My gut feeling is that it is an archeological skull from some burial that was washed into the river.
Indications are the cribra orbitalia/porotic hyperostosis, a condition that even among the poorest demographic ranks does not occur today. Caused by severe iron deficiency anemia over many years. Likewise the abscess that i guess already drained through the bone (otherwise it would not be visible). Yes there are people with poor dental care today. But even the homeless are brought to an emergency dentist before an abscess would break through the bone. Abscesses are normally the result of a cavity that was untreated and had the infection wander down to the root canal. Where it wanders into the jaw. It is a severely painful process with fever and all kinds of really bad symptoms. Can develop over weeks, even months or years from the onset of the cavity on. It is frequently found in pre antibiotics era populations and sepsis resulting from the last stage of the abscess was a very common cause of death.

I am curious about the missing teeth. Were they missing intravital or postmortem (easy to see if you see the skull)?

Both of these guys qualify as a PM based on location (Chicago), age, timeline, and race. Neither profile has photos or makes mention of a broken nose or an oral infection. They are not on the list of rule outs. Chicago is about 1 hour SW of Jackson Township, IL.

TY so much for this info! We must have been preparing posts at the same time. :);)

Is this a condition that is or could be misinterpreted at autopsy? IOW, are there any other dental issues that would "look" like this? I mean no disrespect to you or the ME by asking.
