The Winnipeg Police Service is asking the public to help identity a man who died shortly after being taken to a hospital earlier this month.

"This is not a criminal investigation, as foul play is not suspected. At this time, efforts to confirm the male's identity and notify next of kin have met with negative results," police said in a news release.

Police have pieced together some information from their investigation, including that the man has been known as Ron Foster and Edgar Brown.

He was in his 70s, 5-foot-4 and 109 pounds. He had black, short, curly hair marked with grey streaks and was unshaven.

Self-employed for many years as a handyman, he was last known to be living at a residence on Selkirk Avenue in the city's North End, and has lived on Ellice Avenue and Furby Street in the past, police said.

It is believed he moved to Canada in the 1970s from Jamaica, with the majority of his time in Canada spent in Winnipeg. It is also believed that he has family members in Winnipeg, Jamaica and the greater Toronto area.

"By releasing these details, it is our hope that the deceased's identity can be confirmed and next of kin identified in order for the appropriate notifications to be fulfilled," police said.

"We've exhausted a lot of options at this time, and we're at a point where we are reaching out to the public for some assistance. Time and time again the public comes through for us," said police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact the missing persons unit at 204-986-4510.
