Police seek missing Erie man

Neosho County authorities are looking for a 60-year-old Erie man who has been missing since Sunday.

According to information released by the Erie Police Department, Jay Shumate was last seen about 10 a.m. Sunday in the 100 block of west State Street in Erie.
He is probably on foot and his direction of travel is unknown.

Shumate is 5-8 and weighs 150 pounds. His hair is brown and black with slight graying and he has brown eyes. A clothing description is unavailable.

Family seeks help in search for Erie man

Jay Shumate left his pickup behind and some personal possessions that he wouldn’t leave if planning a trip elsewhere.

He’s familiar with the outdoors. “He would walk along the river every day,” said niece Sonya Shaw.

Shaw said she and other family members hope that landowners between Erie and Parsons could search their land, especially wooded areas, and abandoned sheds and outbuildings.

“It’s a 100 percent certainty by the family he’s somewhere around Erie or Parsons. He’s got to be,” Shaw said.

He had a beard and mustache at the time of his disappearance, and he is supposed to wear eyeglasses, but these were left behind. He has three large scars on his abdomen and a surgical scar on his back. Shumate has the following tattoos: a walking hand with one finger extended on his right upper arm, a broken skull with smoke that turns into the devil on the back of his left shoulder, and a small knife on his upper left arm. Details of Disappearance
Shumate was last seen in Erie, Kansas at 10:00 a.m. on January 17, 2016. He and his mother drove to near Richey’s Pharmacy in the area of Main Street and State Street. He parked the truck, got out, walked away and never returned. He has never been heard from again. Shumate left his wallet, eyeglasses, cigarettes and phone behind. Few details are available in his case.
