MI - GUILTY - Six Dead, 2 Injured in Kalamazoo Shooting Rampage, 20 Feb 2016 *Arrest*

Michigan State Police say they have a “strong suspect” in custody in connection to a series of apparently random shootings that have killed at least seven people, including a 8-year-old girl.

Police said a 45-year-old man from Kalamazoo is in custody and being questioned.

Chief Jeff Hadley with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said there is no longer a danger or threat to the community.

Investigators found no links between Dalton and the victims. Getting said the only thing that connected the three shooting scenes was the shooter.

"There's this sense of loss, this anger, fear, and then you put on top of that – how do you tell the families of these victims they weren't targeted for any reason other than they were there to be targeted? They were shot multiple times, multiple, I mean nine, 10, 11 shell casings at these scenes. This is awful."

A senior at Mattawan High School, [Tyler Daniel] Smith, 17, was among six people shot and killed during a Jason Dalton's Saturday night shooting spree in Kalamazoo.

His father, Richard Eugene Smith, 53, was also among those killed...

Police say the Smith and his father were looking at cars at around 10 p.m. Saturday in a lot of the Seelye Automotive Group dealership on Stadium Drive in Kalamazoo when they were shot at random by Dalton.

• The first shooting occurred at the Meadows Townhomes complex, 5066 Meadows Blvd. around 6 p.m. There, a woman was shot in the parking lot. She is in serious condition.

• A second shooting occurred at Seelye Ford, 4102 Stadium Drive, shortly before 10:30 p.m., where two people were shot and killed in the parking lot. The two killed at the dealership were both male, and are believed to be a father and son who were looking at a vehicle, Kalamazoo Public Safety Chief Jeff Hadley told WWMT.

• Around 10:30 p.m., four people were shot and killed in vehicles in the parking lot of Cracker Barrel, 5581 Cracker Barrel Blvd., off of 9th Street in Texas Township. Another person, a 14-year-old girl, was critically injured at later died at a local hospital.
