Mt. Pleasant man missing since 2002 now believed to be murdered

A missing person’s case in Mt. Pleasant is now being investigated as a possible homicide, according to police.

Charles Monroe Sharp was last seen on Aug. 23, 2002.

For years, investigators classified him as a “missing person.” However, they recently reopened the case and new clues have led them to believe Sharp may have been murdered.

“His social security has never been used. There has been no sign of him being spotted or being seen. We’ve eliminated all of the possibilities that he could be alive,” said Lt. Detective Terry Chandler.

The question is who would want to hurt him?

Charles Monroe Sharp was last seen on Aug. 23, 2002. He lived with his father in the 200 block of Goodloe Street and on that day in 2002, his dad walked to town for a couple of hours. By the time he got home, investigators say his son was gone.

The 54 year-old disabled man did not work and could not drive. Sharp, better known in the community as “Shorty” because of his small size, was 4 feet, 4 inches tall and weighed 88 pounds.

Investigators said they have a person of interest. They are still asking for the public’s help in the city’s only unsolved homicide case.

It's a cold case nearly 14 years old, but a Mid-State community has stood as one as they continued to hope for a break in the case.

Charles Sharp's mysterious disappearance from Mount Pleasant has now been classified as a homicide.

Saturday evening, friends and family of Sharp came together to hold a candlelight vigil in his honor.

While his family said they've learned to live with a lot of questions that still remain surrounding Sharp's apparent death, they were glad to see so many people show up to support them.

Two years after being reopened, the former cold case of a missing Mt. Pleasant man continues to be investigated as a homicide.

Charles Monroe "Shorty" Sharp disappeared without a trace from his home on Goodloe Street on Aug. 21, 2002. He was 54 at the time and last seen by his father, sleeping on the couch, before he returned to an empty home hours later.

Initially considered a missing person's case, its trail went cold and remained untouched for nearly a decade, but Lt. Terry Chandler and Assistant Chief Charles Crosslin reopened the case in 2015 and began following new potential leads.

Since the investigation was reopened in February 2015, the two have identified multiple sources and conducted several searches for remains near Arrow Mines Road with the cooperation of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Maury County Sheriff's Department.

"We believe there has been foul play and we have received information on the case as recent as last week," Chandler told The Daily Herald on Monday. "We want to get this case solved and give his family some closure. Somebody out there knows something."
