"In a cruel twist of fate, an 86-year-old woman was tragically killed after she tripped and hanged herself with her medical alert necklace."

Sadly, the lanyard holding her device did not have a breakaway feature.
Her death was ruled an accident.

The US FDA's 2009 warning stated that 6 serious injuries or deaths were connected w a popular brand of alerts, between 1998 & 2009.

Does your child have lanyard w school ID's, whistle, club affiliation, or decoration?
Safety tip: Make sure there is a breakaway feature.

"Many ... lanyards have a built-in feature known as a "breakaway" closure. Breakaway lanyards release when pulled or when pressure is applied. This prevents choking or hanging. Lanyards with a breakaway feature are most often used in hospitals and healthcare clinics, schools, nursing homes, child care facilities, or factories that require employees to operate machinery."

Good advice,I often wear those infinity scarves and worry of some type of accident or a bad guy being able to subdue me by choking me with the scarf.

Scarves as possible danger? Brings this to mind. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isadora_Duncan

Angela Isadora Duncan
(1877 –1927) American dancer. Born in California. She performed to acclaim throughout Europe.
"Duncan's fondness for flowing scarves contributed to her death in an automobile accident in Nice, France, when she was a passenger in an Amilcar. Her silk scarf, draped around her neck, became entangled around the open-spoked wheels and rear axle, breaking her neck."

Can hardly imagine a scarf long enough to go from a passenger's neck to wrap around spokes of the car's wheels. In any case a sad, bizarre event.
